A mole (medically known as nevi) is usually a dark rounded spot or raised lump which appears on the surface of the skin. They develop when pigment-producing skin cells called melanocytes group together rather than disperse uniformly.
Genetics: They naturally develop at birth, because of genetics or through exposure to UV light (sunlight).
Sun Exposure: New or darker moles may result from increased melanin production caused by UV exposure.
Hormonal Changes: Some hormonal changes in the body around the time of puberty, pregnancy or ageing can give rise to more moles on the body.
Here at the New Birkdale Clinic, we offer excision mole removal, the mole will be cut out of the skin via an excision. The procedure is small and is carried out under local anaesthetic. The wound will require a small stitch.

If you have decided to go for mole removal procedure, our doctors will first examine your moles in the first appointment. This will help them understand the type of moles you have and the best way to treat them.
You are welcome to bring a friend, partner, or family member along for the consultation, which is intended to be informal and educational.
Moles are usually examined on the ABCDE criteria.
A – Asymmetry – if half of the mole is not same as the other half.
B – Border – It defines the texture. Uneven, sharp or ill-defined edges.
C – Colour – If they are unappealing in colour, like, blue, red, black or brown.
D – Diameter – Moles becomes significantly visible if they are bigger than 6 mm.
E – Evolving – Moles can grow over a period of time and sometimes with ageing as the skin becomes saggy. This can make them look unpleasant in some cases.
After the examination, the doctor will also take into account your reasons to remove them. They could be either cosmetic or medical reasons.
The doctor will then suggest the best removal technique to achieve the desired results.
Here are some of the benefits of Mole Removal:
As mentioned above, our doctors will initially examine the mole using the ABCDE parameters and get all the info from you, including the growth of mole, changes in colour, texture and desired results.
The doctors will inform you about the best technique to remove them, what the procedure involves, time taken, aftercare.
The procedure will start by giving a local anaesthesia and sanitising the treatment area.
Here are the types of removal techniques depending on the mole type and size:
Shave Removal: This involves simply shaving a mole using scalpel. These are the moles that are not very deeply rooted and can be removed easily. this procedure usually has no downtime and scarring.
Surgical Excision: This process involves removing the mole and a small patch of surrounding skin. It might require some stiches around the are. This process is ideal for moles that are deeper rooted.
Laser Removal: High energy laser rays help de-pigment the mole and shrink it. This causes them to gradually vanish. This process is idea for small. flat moles that are non-malignant. It does not involve any stitching.
Cryotherapy: The mole is frozen with a liquid nitrogen which causes it to dry out and fall off. It is best suited for small moles.
After the procedure is done, the doctor will cover the area with a bandage or dressing to keep it from any infections. The doctor will also suggest for a follow-up appointment to make sure the area is healing properly.
