    What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the medical name for what’s commonly called ‘man boobs’. An increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men which is caused by an imbalance of oestrogen and testosterone.

It’s surprisingly common and can result in the male’s breasts swelling and becoming larger than normal. This can present as a small amount of extra tissue around the nipples right through to more prominent breasts and it can affect one or both breasts.

The condition can affect newborn babies, teenage boys going through puberty as well as older men and, while it’s not necessarily a serious problem, it can be hard to cope with and cause embarrassment.

It can affect both breasts or just one and while it can occasionally go away on its own, you may choose to have surgery if it doesn’t.

Are There Different Types of Gynecomastia?

Yes, Gynaecomastia can be classed in different categories: ‘pure glandular’ or ‘mixed’.

In cases of ‘pure glandular’ gynecomastia the enlargement of the breasts is caused by an excess amount of fibrous breast tissue (glands).

Where it’s ‘mixed’, (the most common form) then the cause is both excess fibrous breast tissue and fatty tissue.

There is also pseudo-gynaecomastia – where the cause is excess fat only. Diet and exercise can often resolve this as it primarily occurs in overweight and obese people.

Mixed gynaecomastia is treated by the removal of the fatty tissue using liposuction and excision of the glandular tissue; whereas ‘pure glandular’ gynaecomastia is treated by excision of glandular tissue.

Everything You Need to Know About Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia, also known as, male chest reduction surgery, involves removing extra fat from the chest area and sometimes, excess skin to get a sculpted look. Before the surgery, our doctors will have a detailed consultation to have a deep understanding of your needs and medical history.

The surgery will be performed using general or local anaesthesia.

If the primary goal is chest reduction, the surgeon uses liposuction technique where small incisions will be made around the chest and a suction tube is used to suck the fat out.

If the primary goal is to remove excess skin, the incisions are made around the areola and excess grandular skin is removed.

In some case, both the procedures are combined together for enhanced results.

    What Causes Gynecomastia?

There are various causes for gynecomastia including:

    Hormone Imbalance

Gynecomastia can be caused by an imbalance between the sex hormones testosterone and oestrogen. All men produce oestrogen to a certain level but with their higher testosterone levels stops it from causing excess breast tissue.

Sometimes the balance of these hormones changes which can lead to a man’s breasts growing.

    Obesity

If you are severely overweight then this could lead to an increase in your oestrogen levels which, in turn, can cause breast tissue to grow.

Being overweight means you’re also more likely to have excess fat which will also add to the condition. Losing weight and exercising can sometimes reverse it, but not always.

    Newborn Baby Boys

Because oestrogen passes through the placenta from Mum to baby, gynecomastia can sometimes affect newborns.

This is usually temporary and disappears after a few weeks.

    Puberty

Hormone levels vary when a boy hits puberty and if the testosterone drops too much then the oestrogen can cause breast tissue to grow. Gynecomastia is common in during puberty and does usually clear as the boy gets older and their hormone levels stabilise.

    Ageing

The older a man gets, the less testosterone they produce. They also tend to store more body fat. Both of these factors can lead to gynecomastia.

These are the most common causes but there are some more rare reasons why it can occur such as:

    • Side effects of some medicines
    • Drug use – such as cannabis or anabolic steroids
    • Alcohol misuse
    • Certain health conditions including kidney failure or liver disease
    • Lumps or an infection in the testicles

If you suspect you are affected by gynecomastia then you should always see your GP first and if surgery is your chosen path then get in touch with us to book a consultation.
