Microdermabrasion is a deeply effective skin treatment. It is one of the simplest and least disruptive skin treatments and is ideal even for people with sensitive skin to renew a fresh, young-looking glow.
The microdermabrasion technique works with microcrystals, which are hard enough to disrupt unwanted tired skin cells that cause dull looking skin, but small enough not to do any damage or even cause discomfort or pain.
The technique involves propelling the microcrystals across the skin’s surface, removing only the top layer of skin cells. This technology reveals new, living cells leaving a healthy glow. The epidermal layers of the skin are rejuvenated leading to collagen production and plumper skin.
Microdermabrasion treatment can be used to:
it’s important to have an initial consultation with our doctors to understand your skin concerns and goals from the procedure. The doctor will them make a customized treatment plan for you and caters to your skin type and concerns.
Any medical history or skin allergies should be briefed to the doctor to avoid any side effects.
The skin is well prepared before the procedure begins by thoroughly cleaning it to remove any dirt or oil.
there are mainly two types of exfoliation processes used for microdermabrasion – crystal and diamond tip.
Crystal Microdermabrasion
This includes spraying a fine mist of micro-crystals made of aluminium oxide or sodium bicarbonate and then vacuuming them to remove any impurities and dead cells.
This process gives skin a deep exfoliation which is suitable for thick or a bit rough skin type.
The exfoliation also helps in boosting up collagen and reducing fine lines.
Crystal microdermabrasion may not be the best for sensitive skin types as the crystals can cause mild irritation.
Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion
It includes exfoliating the skin with a diamond tipped wand that vacuums away skin impurities. This method is more precise and does not use any crystal for exfoliating the skin.
Diamond tip microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types and does not have any crystal residue unlike, crystal microdermabrasion.
However, this method may not be as effective as crystal microdermabrasion for thick skin types.
Exfoliates and removes dead skin: It removes the dead skin cells that promote the growth of new ones giving a brighter skin.
Better skin texture: As the process evens out the rough patches, the skin looks smoother and cleaner.
Reducing fines lines and wrinkles: Faster cells turnover boosts up skin collagen that helps in reducing fine lines and make the skin look younger.
Minimizing pores: As it’s an exfoliating process, it helps in removing dirt and oil from the clogged pores. This helps in minimizing the pores and give a more even skin texture.
Reduces acnes and blemishes: It helps in breaking down acne scars which helps in reducing acnes or any other discolouration on skin.
Keep your skin hydrated: Use a gentle moisturizer and toner to hydrate the skin. Consult all your skin products with the doctor to make sure you don’t have any allergic reactions.
Wear sunscreen: Wear an SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Avoid sun exposure as the skin is very sensitive during the healing period.
Avoid makeup: Makeup can have active ingredients that can cause allergic reaction on your skin. Let your skin breathe for 3-5 days and use minimal products.
Let your skin rest: It is possible to notice some redness or swelling on the face. Try to stay more indoors and not pick or touch the skin.
Avoid intense workout: avoid excess sweating as the skin is still healing and the bacteria may cause some allergy and clogged pores.
While both are very popular skin treatments, they address different skin concerns. Microdermabrasion works on the top layer of the skin by exfoliating it while microneedling causes micro-injuries that boost collagen production.
Microdermabrasion is best suited for dull skin having acnes, mild scars or rough skin tone. Microneedling, on the other hand, treats wrinkles, fine lines, deep pores and acne scars.
Microdermabrasion works on the outer layer of the skin while microneedling penetrates the needle inside the skin layers that promotes collagen and skin elasticity.
Microdermabrasion gives immediate results while microneedling takes about 3-6 weeks for collagen to build up.
Although both involve minimal pain, microdermabrasion involves less pain as compared to microneedling.
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types while microneedling is not recommended for skin with active acnes or rosacea.
