To Lift Or To Inject – That Is The Question

With non-surgical procedures skyrocketing in popularity in recent years, it’s easy to think that the best way to counteract the signs of ageing is through injectables such as dermal fillers and anti-ageing injections. However, this isn’t always the case, and rhytidectomies, or face lifts, are still a popular choice for many people aiming to turn back the clock on their skin. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the difference between anti-ageing injections and facelifts, and help you choose the right procedure for you.

Anti-ageing injections are great for treating wrinkles and fine lines on all areas of the face. At New Birkdale Clinic, we use Botulinum Toxin Type A, a high quality form of anti-ageing injections. It works to reduce signs of ageing by blocking nerve signals to muscles in the face. This stops the muscles from moving, which lessens the appearance of fine lines, prevents existing wrinkles from worsening, and stops new lines from appearing. Forehead lines, frown lines, smile lines, crow’s feet and bunny lines can all be effectively treated with anti-ageing injections.

A facelift is one of the most popular surgical aesthetic procedures. The term ”facelift” can describe any of a group of surgical procedures designed to remove excess skin and fat, and tighten loose skin and muscles. Facelifts can give more dramatic and longer-lasting results than Botox injections, and are more effective at treating significant sagging in the face, and muscle and skin laxity. However, they are a far more time-consuming, expensive and taxing procedure on the body than non-surgical alternatives like Botox.

Types of facelift include the mini lift, which is the quickest and least invasive form of facelift and involves simply lifting and tucking the skin.

The SMAS facelift also lifts a deeper layer of muscle known as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system or SMAS as well as the skin above, creating a more significant lift in the lower face and neck, while also allowing for the removal of excess fat. An extended SMAS lift can also be carried out to improve the mid face and nasolabial lines, as can a composite facelift, which generally involves an extended SMAS lift, with the addition of a brow lift and/or lower eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Facelifts are a far more extensive procedure than Botox, and takes significantly more time in the clinic and in recovery. Facelift procedures can take from around two to five hours, depending on the surgeon and the type of facelift you choose. At New Birkdale Clinic, you will have bandages on your face for up to five days after a facelift, and sutures and clips will be removed between four and  ten days after, depending on the type of facelift you have. You will need to rest at home for around a week after the procedure and most people take two to three weeks off work. It generally takes around two months to see the full results of a facelift, when your face will look stunning and refreshed. Depending on the type of facelift procedure, the results can last from two to five years for a mini lift, to five to ten years for deeper types of facelift.

Anti-ageing injection, being a non-surgical procedure, is significantly less time-consuming. A single wrinkle smoothing injection session will last between 10-15 minutes, and the full results will be seen within  5-7 days. You should avoid exercise and touching the area for 24 hours, and hot baths for 48 hours following your treatment, but you can leave the clinic and get back to your life on the same day. wrinkle smoothing injections last for three to six months, when repeat treatments are recommended to maintain the results. However, with repeated treatments, the muscles are “trained” not to form new lines, leaving you with fresh, youthful skin.

    Be The Face Of Christmas

Ok. So we know Christmas is still over 2 months away, but it’s never too early to ensure you’re ready for the big day and all its celebrations. From the office party and the do at your favourite restaurant, to the fabulous meal you’re either hosting or attending, there’s plenty of opportunities to show off your beautiful face. Therefore, let’s talk about the great treatments you could have that will make it glisten and glow.

    The Face Lift

What Can A Face Lift Do?

If your face has started to sag, or you’re concerned you looked tired, then a face lift can help. It can tighten your skin, improve facial contours by giving you a stronger jawline and smoother cheeks and leaves you looking younger and refreshed. Moreover, make-up becomes easier to apply and there’s no need for scarves, turtle necks or other items of clothing that hide excess skin, lines or wrinkles on the face or neck. That means you can wear that gorgeous dress or statement suit and let your confidence shine through at parties, and feel more comfortable at home.

What Does A Face Lift Involve?

At New Birkdale Clinic, we offer the Minimal Access Cranial Suspension (MACS) facelift. This involves vertical uplift of the face’s deep tissue and skin traction, restoring sagging jowls, cheeks and the neck back to its former glory. It can also be used for creases around the eyelids and mouth.

An incision is made from the ear lobe and follows the natural contours of the face to reach the temporal area (near the eyebrow). Sutures are then attached to the temporal fascia and excess fluids and fat is removed by way of a small drain.

If non-surgical procedures are more your thing, then facial fillers, Anti-ageing injections or a thread lift may be the answer.

    Anti-ageing Injections

Anti-ageing injections is a quick procedure, especially great for crow’s feet, as well as forehead, frown, bunny and smile lines. It works by blocking nerve signals in your facial muscles, freezing them and reducing the effects of wrinkles and lines, rejuvenating the skin. A big bonus is that future lines won’t appear as harsh, meaning you can smile as much as you like during the holidays.

    Facial Fillers

Used to plump up thinning lips, reduce tear troughs, sagging cheeks and crow’s feet, as well as improve the appearance of scars, facial fillers help to give the face back its natural beauty. Rich in hyaluronic acid (HA) and collagen, the fillers boosts skin moisture, cell regeneration and therefore increases volume.

    Thread Lift

If you’re wary of injections, incisions or deep-tissue change, then a thread lift is a great alternative. Working just as well on wrinkles, drooping eyebrows and crow’s feet as on sagging neck, cheek and jowl skin, a thread lift involves inserting polydioxanone (PDO) threads into the hypodermis skin layer. This causes micro-injuries that stimulates skin repair through collagen production, gradually tightening and lifting the skin over time. Skin texture and elasticity are improved and new blood vessels also develop, aiding your skin’s microcirculation.

Let’s Face It: The Benefits Of A Face Lift

Our faces define our beauty, our appearance and how we show ourselves to the world. They give us the confidence to gain dream jobs, meet partners and be our authentic selves. We may live exciting lives, but our faces shouldn’t look like the roadmap. The good, and the bad – the effects of ageing, stress and sun exposure – can cause loose or sagging skin, lines, deep jowls and wrinkles, as well as a reduction in self-esteem. A face lift can renew your confidence and restore your face back to its brilliant beauty. In this post, we look at the advantages of face lifts and how you could benefit.

    What is a Face Lift?

A face lift, or a Rhytidectomy involves the removal of surplus skin and fat, as well as the lifting and tightening of loose skin and sagging muscles. Areas focused on include the eyelids, nose and cheeks, and patients regularly request a brow lift and/or eye-bag surgery for a complete and refreshed look. There are different types, including the ‘The Mini Lift’, ‘The SMAS Lift’ and ‘The Composite Facelift’.

    Briefly, the aforementioned lifts involve:

The Mini Lift: A simple skin lift and tighten.

The SMAS Lift: The muscles (part of the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System) are also lifted and excess fat is removed. The SMAS sags as we age due to reduced collagen production.

The Composite Facelift: Combines an extended SMAS lift with a brow lift and lower eyelid surgery.
