Breast Reduction Before and After Pictures

Looking at breast reduction before and after photos is one of the best ways that you can prepare yourself for surgery before committing to a specific surgeon or clinic.

However, it is important to remember that pictures showing the client directly before and after surgery will not look as good as pictures taken after a period of recovery because breast reduction scars after 1 year will not be as prominent as they are immediately post-surgery.

At The New Birkdale Clinic, we include before and after pictures in your surgical package

Why we take breast reduction surgery pictures

First, and most obviously, being able see your results post-surgery and compare them to your breasts pre-surgery is very important. It is your body after all and your happiness after spending time in our clinic is incredibly important to us.

Secondly, by providing you with a set of pictures from inside our clinic, you will be able to immediately compare the before and after pictures and know that they are consistent with external factors such as lighting.

We recommend that you also take your own before and after pictures in your own home, with clothes and without clothes, so that you can get a full sense of your appearance following reduction surgery.

When you return home following your procedure and your recovery continues, you can then take more pictures and document your recovery journey. By doing this, you will be able to look back and spot small changes from photo to photo which you may not be able to do day by day if you were just looking in the mirror.

Before and after boob reduction images

If you require a breast reduction, then you may be suffering from pain, discomfort, and general annoyance at parts of your life.

Before surgery, it is likely that you will be experiencing back and neck pain. This comes from the weight that you are carrying on your front throwing off your posture.

When women have uncommonly large breasts, it can be hard to find clothes and bras that fit comfortably. If you are finding that this is the case for you, then you may want to consider reduction mammoplasty.

After surgery, the pain in your back and neck will ease as you will be carrying less weight on your front and therefore putting less strain on your spine.

By inspecting before & after pictures, you’ll be able to guide us on what sized breasts you would prefer post-surgery so you will then be able to shop for clothes and bras that you like in a size that fits you.

    Large breast reduction photos

If your breasts were exceptionally large before surgery then the after pictures may look the most astonishing as opposed to someone only receiving a small reduction surgery.

For example, take these before and after pictures from one of our clients in the past.

    four-before-and-after-pictures-of-breast-reduction-surgery

Before surgery, this client thought her breasts were too big and therefore wanted reduction surgery. While she was receiving surgery, she had enough tissue removed to make her breasts look like how she wanted.

You will also be able to notice how her nipples now face forwards rather than facing downwards. During breast reduction surgery, the areola is moved and can even be made smaller if needed by removing the skin around the circumference.

Breast reduction results before and after

Breast reduction recovery time will vary between individuals but most patients will be able to return to their normal routine after four to six weeks.

During this time your breasts may be bruised and swollen. You may need to take time off work depending on your job and it is advised that you avoid lifting heavy objects until your breasts are fully healed.

One of the most desired results is an increase to confidence and the ability to be happy with what you see in the mirror. That is what we most look forward to seeing after treating our clients.

Breast Augmentation Recovery and Aftercare: Expert Advice from Professionals

Whether you have an enlargement, reduction, lift or correction, your new breasts can take some getting used to. They’ll certainly look great, but aftercare is important to not only increase your comfort, but ensure your breasts keep their shape. We believe dedication to our patients is imperative to their recovery, so have detailed everything you need to know about post-breast surgery care in this helpful post.

    Breast Augmentation Recovery Time

    Breast Enlargements, Reductions and Lifts:

    • 1 week taken off work (2 weeks for reductions and lifts).
    • No lifting for 2 weeks and no heavy lifting for 6.
    • It’s advised you don’t drive for 1-2 weeks post-surgery.
    • Normal activity can be resumed 4-6 weeks later.

Can I Shower After Breast Surgery?

Any dressings, bandages or plastic strips should be kept dry following the procedure, though should you need to clean any wounds, gently use a clean wet towel, free of shower gel, soap or other bathroom products.

1 week after surgery a shower is permitted. Have a friend or relation wait outside just in case you feel faint so they can help you out.

    What About Other Water?

It’s advised that the following water sources are avoided for 6 weeks:

    • Swimming Pools.
    • Hot Tubs / Jacuzzis.
    • Bath Water.
    • Lakes.
    • Rivers.
    • The Sea.

What To Expect After Breast Surgery

A rush of emotions. Excitement to see your new breasts, coupled with exhaustion and the need to recover, which luckily pain-killers can assist with. It’s normal to feel disorientated the first 24 hours after breast surgery as anaesthesia, readjustment and medication take their effect.

    You Should Also Expect:

    • Your breasts will be bruised and swollen for 2-3 months and will feel uncomfortable, though this will dissipate over time.
    • Though implants are soft, your breasts may become firm due to the swelling. As the swelling subsides, your breasts will become softer too.
    • Gently massaging the scars 6 weeks after surgery can help with any pain. Your surgeon can discuss technique with you for effectiveness.

Can I Wear A Push-Up Bra After Breast Surgery?

You can, but not until 6 weeks after surgery. A push-up bra could alter implant location, raising them and changing your desired look. Implants need to settle to lock their position in place. After 6 weeks, wearing a push-up bra should not affect your new breasts.

    Additional Clothing Advice

    • Loose-fitting clothing will lessen sensitivity around the chest area.
    • Buttoned shirts and jackets are a lot easier to put on than tops, blouses and hoodies and will cause less discomfort too.

What To Wear After Breast Surgery

You should wear a breast surgery recovery bra, day and night for up to 6 weeks following surgery. This bra offers many benefits, such as reducing swelling and bleeding, as well as supporting the chest during potential painful moments, such as sneezing and coughing.

A soft sports bra is a great alternative, unlike underwire bras that can cause irritation.

Travel and Flying Post Breast Surgery

As the first week after surgery is the recovery period, it’s advised that long-haul travel and flights are avoided, as this is when complications can occur. Should an issue arise mid-air or on the road, finding suitable medical care may prove difficult. Not only that, pulling heavy luggage, stress due to traffic/delays and potential blood clots could cause post-surgery bleeding and discomfort. A week gives your breasts time to settle and start to heal.

If you must travel, we recommend the following:

    • Have a friend lift/pull your luggage throughout your journeys.
    • Drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and keep you feeling refreshed.
    • Keep pain-killers nearby should you experience soreness.
    • You may notice implant expansion or contracture with changes in cabin pressure. This will only be temporary and they will restore themselves naturally.

How To Sleep After Breast Surgery

For the first 2 days, sleeping upright can help reduce soreness, swelling and pain.

For the following 2-3 weeks, sleeping on your back is best, to avoid deformation or unnecessary pressure that sleeping on your stomach or side could cause.

As mentioned above, wearing a sports bra will help keep your breasts in place during sleep movement.

    Breast Enlargement Recovery Tips

There’s nothing more exciting that finally getting the breasts that you’ve always wanted, and seeing the final results! However, after surgery, your breasts are going to need a little TLC to ensure they heal effectively, and end up looking great. You’ll be feeling emotional, excited, and absolutely exhausted, so at this point, it’s important to not get ahead of yourself, and to slow down, and make sure you do everything you can to give yourself a quick and smooth recovery. Here at New Birkdale Clinic, we care about our patients having the best aftercare they can. That’s why we’ve put together this list of some of our favourite tips to ease the recovery from breast enlargement surgery.

    Wear Your Surgical Bra Constantly

constantly wear your surgical bra after breast surgery

You’re going to have to wear a surgical bra for about 4-6 weeks after your surgery. The surgical bra is there to support you during the healing process, and it’s important that you wear it constantly, day and night. Your breasts will be at their most fragile and sore during this time of recovery, so it’s important you look after them.

Your surgical bra will help to reduce bruising, swelling and bleeding. If you keep it on throughout the initial healing process, you’ll heal much more quickly and effortlessly than you would without it. It’s going to prevent scar tissue from forming and make sure that your implants stay in the right position. After 6 weeks you can talk to your surgeon about alternative bra styles.

Eat Light, Healthy Food And Drink Lots Of Water

    healthy-snacks-for-breast-recovery

Before heading in for your surgery, take some time to make sure that your fridge is packed with a range of light, healthy meals to get you through the first few weeks of recovery. The anaesthesia might make you feel nauseous for a couple of days, so make sure you have soft and light foods available, and healthy foods will be important for making sure you have the energy and strength to recover properly. We recommend citrus fruits for the dose of Vitamin C, plenty of vegetables, and almonds, which are great for stimulating tissue development!

It’s easy to become dehydrated during the recovery period, so one of the best things you can do is to drink a lot of water. Water is great for helping with swelling, constipation, and some of the other immediate side effects of your breast surgery.

    Plan To Have Some Assistance

plan to have assistance after breast enlargement

You’re going to need to have somebody with you for 24 hours after your surgery. You will have just undergone major surgery, and you’ll need help moving around. Getting up to make yourself food or going to the bathroom will feel really difficult. You can’t start driving until you’re finished with your pain medication.

You won’t be able to do any heavy lifting for about six weeks after surgery, so having somebody at hand to help out will make your life a lot easier. Even just organising a friend to come over every now and then to help out with some chores is a good idea. If you have kids, you’re definitely going to need a bit of help. Kids count as heavy lifting too!

Rest A Lot And Exercise Little

get a lot of rest after breast enlargement

It goes without saying that getting plenty of rest is extremely important during the recovery phase. For a few days, spending a lot of time in bed and resting will lead to a quick and healthy recovery. Just remember to listen to your body, and make sure you have plenty of pillows and something interesting to watch on TV!

The first few days following surgery may feel like a marathon for some, but we promise that after that, you’re going to keep feeling better and better. However, it is best to avoid returning to any kind of exercise in the first 4 weeks of recovery. You may feel ready, but your breasts might not be. The risk of extending your recovery period isn’t worth it, so just be gentle and ease your way back into exercise very slowly. Avoid running or doing anything that involves lifting your arms above your head.

For more information about how to look after yourself after a breast enlargement, explore our FAQ section or contact us here at the clinic. We’re always happy to help, and we want to ensure that all of our patients get the advice and support that they need to have a healthy recovery.

Do you need a breast uplift?

We find that when some people think of a breast uplift (mastopexy) there is often some confusion with this treatment and breast implants. In fact, the two are very different procedures that offer equally different results. You may be suited for either treatment or both depending on your own specific case.

If you want to lift your breasts so that your natural breasts appear perkier and your nipples sit straight rather than drooping down, then a breast lift will likely provide you with excellent results.

Breast lifts are designed to combat these modifying elements and return lowered breasts to their natural position, or otherwise lift them so that they are supported in a more desirable position.

At New Birkdale Clinic, our breast surgeons can guide you through the benefits of a mastopexy (breast lift) and help you gauge whether the treatment is right for you, how long does breast lift last and what you can expect your results to look like.

    Breast lift vs implants

There are many differences between a breast lift and breast implants, the main one being that breast lifts do not involve the insertion of any implant into the breast.

With a breast lift, you are limited to an extent by your current amount of breast tissue, fat and muscle because you are working solely with what you already have. Whereas breast implants can increase the size of your breasts and change their shape.

A breast lift procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and will take up to two hours to complete which is slightly longer than the procedure for breast implant. It may also be possible for you to leave the clinic on the same day as your treatment.

There are other substitutes for breast lifts, although they may not be as reliable or long lasting. For example, there are other procedures to provide the effect of a breast lift such as breast tightening cream. However, breast tightening cream side effects may make this an unsuitable solution for you.

    Breast Lift Without Implants

If you have experienced some degree of ptosis (sagging or drooping, in this case referring to the breasts) yet retained some breast volume then you may be eligible for breast lift surgery without the need to include implants.

This is when the only action that a breast surgeon makes is the removal of excess breast skin and tissue to allow the breasts to sit in a more desirable, perkier, position.

There are a number of reasons why an eligible patient should consider this form of surgery.

First of all, there are a large number of patients who do not want increased volume in their breasts, or a change in shape. Instead, they simply wish for their natural breasts to be positioned as they previously were before factors like age, weight fluctuations, or pregnancy took their toll.

Secondly, breast lifts without implants cost less than surgeries including implants. This is understandable as the surgery can be completed quicker, and there is no need to pay for the implants themselves.

In addition to this also comes the fact that you will not have to pay for implant replacements down the line. Breast implants have a finite lifespan, and at some point they will need to be replaced to maintain their optimal aesthetics – something that you will not have to worry about if you do not receive an implant in the first place.

How long does a mastopexy without implants last

A mastopexy surgery without implants will usually have results that last for up to 15 years post-surgery.

If you do receive breast implants, we advise that your implants may need replacing around 10 years post-surgery, so therefore it may be possible to see longer-lasting results by electing to undergo a mastopexy without any implants.

However, these are general guidelines, and every patient will experience different results due to their own body shape, genetics, and personal lifestyle. All that you can do is follow your surgeon’s advice as best as you can, and this advice will be made clear to you both at your initial consultation and after your surgery.

Scars after a breast lift with no implants

Patients receiving breast lift surgery without breast implants will, in most cases, receive a lollipop surgical technique.

This is a popular method of performing a breast lift surgery as it results in a small amount of scarring and only utilises incisions necessary for the breast lift to be effective.

In short, there are four different incisions that can be made depending on what type of mastopexy you are having:

    • An incision near the top of the areola
    • An incision around the areola
    • A vertical incision from the bottom of the areola to the breast fold
    • A horizontal incision along the breast fold

A lollipop breast lift involves creating an incision around the areola and a vertical incision to the breast fold. This results in the creation of breast lift scars that are easily hidden by underwear.

More information on scars after breast lifts can be found here, and you can see examples of some of our breast lift with no implant pictures here.

    Cosmetic Surgery FAQs

We sat down with our Coordinators to go through the cosmetic surgery FAQs that you want answers to.

Q: Is under the muscle better?

A: There is no right or wrong when it comes to placing implants as each patient is different.

If you have enough breast tissue, the surgeon will go under the muscle to give that more natural look and to minimalise the risk of seeing implant edging.

    Q: Does it hurt?

A: Yes, but this is mainly due to discomfort, after all, you are having surgery! However, we always give you pain relief and advise you to keep on top of it to ease the pain.

a woman wearing a bra thanks to cosmetic surgery FAQS

Q: Do I have to buy the bra you recommend?

A: YES! The bra is vital as it is part of your recovery process. This is not your everyday sports bra, it is a medical bra designed for Cosmetic Breast procedures.

    Q: Who is the best?

A: We get this question a lot, and our answer is always the same – ALL our Surgeons are fantastic!! They all give different opinions and views on the procedure and the person.

We cannot advise you who to go with so we advise you to do your research.

Q: What is a Pre Op?

A: A pre-op is a pre-examination to prove you are physically fit for surgery. Depending on the procedure you are undergoing, it normally consists of; height, weight, BP, heart rate oxygen levels, MRSA swabs. It is VERY important you attend this examination, as without the results your surgery will be placed on hold OR Cancelled.

Q: Is the surgeon at my consultation, the same consultant performing my surgery?

A: Yes! Whichever surgeon you see at consultation is the same surgeon performing your surgery!

Profhilo treatment– What’s All The Excitement About?

Introducing the new kid on the block (insert your own drum roll here) we’d love you to meet Profhilo!

We all know that when we hit 30, we start losing a significant amount of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and when that happens we start to think about preventative treatments. There’s plenty of options already on the market, depending on what kind of result you’re after but Profhilo is fast becoming a favourite.

Learn ore about out anti-wrinkle injections and how can you benefit from them.

    What is Profhilo treatment?

It’s a new Hyaluronic Acid gel treatment which has one of the highest concentrations of HA on the market and helps to lift and hydrate your skin, leading a rejuvenated, radiant appearance. Essentially it significantly improves the tissue quality (which can actually compliment all other aesthetic or cosmetic procedures.)

Our body produces less hyaluronic acid as we grow in age. This may cause, skin to dry, wrinkles and dryness. Profhilo is a new form of injectable therapy that reduces these unwanted effects and help in anti-ageing.

Profhilo can be used in the Face, neck, and décolletage. On the body it can treat the hands, upper arms and above the knees – put simply, It helps to get rid of crepey skin by hydrating it from inside out.

We also cover other non-surgical facial treatments like, microneedling/dermapen, plasma elite.

    Profhilo needle

What’s the difference between Profhilo and Filler?

Profhilo is highly purified hyaluronic acid which is injected into the skin. It initially hydrates the skin and goes on to stimulate your natural collagen and elastin production for a rejuvenating effect.

Dermal fillers also tend to be hyaluronic acid based with additional ingredients included. Like Profhilo, dermal fillers are injected into the skin.

While this sounds similar, both work quite differently. Dermal fillers just work on a particular area, like cheeks or lips and do not spread to the area surrounding it.

Profhilo contains the highest amount of concentrated hyaluronic acid which helps in producing more collagen. Hyalyronic acid holds moisture by heat bonding rather than chemical bonding when injected. Consequently, Profhilo offers amazing anti-aging benefits for our skin by acting as a hydrator rather than a filler!

Other than hyaluronic acid, fillers have other components too. It also consists of calcium hydroxylapatite, which is a mineral and a major component found in bones.

Filler adds more volume and structure to the specific areas while profhilo does not.

Profhilo gives more nuanced results than fillers. They are used for overall skin enhancement while fillers are for redefining shapes and sizes.

Unlike Profhilo, they are targeted at specific areas to replenish lost volume and repair skin damage, as well as increasing natural collagen and elastin levels in that area.

    Profhilo kit being used

How often should you have Profhilo?

You do need 2 sessions with around a four-week gap so you don’t overload (2mls at a time is the most you can do) or irritate the skin but you get more of the effect with two.

After the initial treatment phase spaced in 4 weeks, you should get the maintenance sessions every 6 months. This slight touch up can give longer lasting results and a constant hydrating skin.

Frequency of getting a profhilo also depends on factors like:

Skin type and condition: A dry and more damaged skin will need profhilo more frequently than other skin types.

Age: As collagen concentration is less in aged skin, they would need the sessions more often than a younger skin.

Time of results: If you wish you get results faster, you should take more frequent sessions.

Sensitivity: A highly sensitive skin should many sessions in a small window as this can cause skin irritation.

    How does Profhilo work?

You can expect to see a gradual intense hydration, improvement in lines and tightness of your skin. After eight weeks is when you will see the most improvement with a lifting and tightening of the skin – it will be more hydrated and appear more youthful and in better health. Some patients have reported an immediate improvement after treatment. Overall, you can expect increased firmness, elasticity and an overall improved quality of skin, with the effects lasting up to six months or longer.

The effects are temporary and repeat treatments of 1 or 2 sessions can be carried out from approximately 6 months onward in order to maintain the results and, and as with every treatment, results will vary from person to person and depends upon the degree of correction required, your age and lifestyle, and to your body’s response to treatment.

Pribilof pen being used on a woman face

Does Profhilo help with heavy lines?

No, Profhilo won’t fill heavy lines.  It’s a skin quality treatment, for smoother texture, bounce, plumpness, elasticity. It remodels skin but will not make any difference to contours.

For lift, you need fillers and for addressing formed lines like the forehead or crow’s feet, wrinkle relaxing injections is still best. But really if you’re having wrinkle relaxing injections and filler treatments you should also consider Profhilo – it will work in the background to make other injectable results look better and last longer thanks to a better quality of tissue.

Profhilo isn’t the easiest of products to administer. Inject too deeply and the HA can’t get to the surface of the skin to do its job of smoothing and elasticating and inject too lightly and you end up with a face of acid-filled pimples that eventually fade into nothing so, as with all injectables, you should always go somewhere where they know what they are doing.

If you think it’s for you then we’d love to welcome you into our clinic for a consultation with one of our specialists.

Anti-Ageing Injections & Fillers – Keep it Clinical

Would you feel completely comfortable having a tooth extracted by a beauty therapist who had learned that one procedure and had observed dentists performing it, but had no other medical training? Or would you prefer a qualified dentist to do it? You should have the same thought process when it comes to anti-ageing injections and Fillers.

Both procedures are classed as non-surgical and both involve having a substance injected into your body – but if the person holding the needle isn’t a trained clinician, you could end up scarred for life.

This isn’t about doctors thinking they are more superior and skilled than therapists, it’s simply about what each has been trained to do, and the risk they could pose to a patient. It’s not illegal for beauty therapists to perform filler injections, it’s just not a good idea in terms of patient safety.

Whether you’re considering anti-ageing injections or Fillers; (both are used to rectify or prevent the signs of ageing; while fillers are typically used to add volume and plump the skin, anti-ageing injections temporarily blocks nerve signals in the muscles where it’s injected to restrict movement and treat ‘expression lines’.) one thing is for certain – you need to put your safety first.

Worldwide, hyaluronic acid-based injectables (fillers) were the second most common procedure performed in 2017 – behind only anti-ageing injections – according to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and over the last few years there has been an increase in ‘bogus’ nurses and amateur beauticians performing unsafe treatments in non-clinical surroundings. As a result, they say more patients are suffering from parts of their lips becoming lumpy or disproportionate in size, infections, ulceration or necrosis (when the lip tissue dies and goes black).

Anyone can buy hyaluronic acid gel and inject it into someone’s lips. This is because there are no laws in the UK that regulate people who carry out non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as lip fillers.

Meanwhile, anti-ageing injections are classed as a prescription-only medicine in the UK, which means it can only be prescribed and given to a patient by a qualified prescriber. Only medical professionals can qualify as prescribers, so therapists can only perform anti-ageing injections if they work alongside a prescribing clinician. The prescriber cannot dispense the toxin remotely; they must be present at a patient consultation and the prescriber also has responsibility for the outcome of the procedure.

This means that reputable clinics will only employ medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, and dentists to administer toxin and filler treatments.

Though current legislation does not prevent therapists from performing injectable treatments, it is likely that regulations will be introduced at some point – anti-ageing injections and Fillers may be ‘non-surgical’, but they involve a medical procedure and are not just a beauty treatment.

Dermal filler injections are not superficial skin treatments, they are needle injections that penetrate the skin to a depth that increases the risk of complications. It’s therefore important to remember that it isn’t just about who can wield a syringe but who has the ability to deal with any possible complications.

    Your Journey Through Surgery

Making the decision to go under the knife for cosmetic surgery is one of the biggest you’ll ever make. If it’s your first time you might be wondering what the process is, so here’s a guide to what you can expect on your journey…

The first step is making contact, if you have come to us direct then we’ll give you as much information about your desired procedure as we can and we will also advise you to get as much information as possible from other sources including the internet, google search, websites, YouTube etc about the procedure, its benefits, potential complications and expected results about the procedure you are interested in.

You’ll then be offered an appointment with a qualified and experienced surgeon or another healthcare professional who has practising rights at our clinic. Once you choose to consult with any of the doctors or other healthcare professionals, they will answer any questions and address any concerns you may have. The choice will be yours to book or not to book the treatment.

    YOUR CONSULTATION

If it’s your first visit, then we will need you to complete a medical history form and make us aware of any medication you are taking or have been taking recently. If you already have breast implants, your surgeon would need to know full details of those implants including make and size at the time of your consultation. If you attend or have attended a hospital specialist including a Psychotherapist within the last two years, the surgeon will need a copy of last report from the specialist to your GP or to you. If you omit any information you are potentially putting your wellbeing at risk.

It is essential that you discuss your requirements realistically and honestly during your consultation, so that the surgeon and other healthcare professionals can establish whether your expectations are achievable and within the normal constraints of surgery and other treatments. Photographs will be taken on the day of the surgery. These photographs will form part of your clinical record. They will not be used for any other purpose or shown to other patients without your permission. A chaperone will be present throughout the consultation to take notes on what has been discussed between the patient and surgeon.

If you proceed with surgery you will need to sign a consent form on the day. This may be at the time of your consultation with the surgeon or on the day of surgery or on both occasions. A copy of the consent form will be provided to you so that you can read it through before the day of your surgery.  This just ensures that, before your operation, you and your surgeon are in full agreement regarding the procedure that has been planned for you and that you understand the choices of treatment available, the potential benefits and the risks and possible complications of the various options. You will not be able to proceed unless this consent form has been completed and signed by both you and your surgeon.

After the forms have been filled you will be taken to talk to our Patient coordinator. They will discuss with you about available surgery dates, prices and aftercare and also answer any further questions they may have.

    woman holding breast implants

After taking the time to really think about whether surgery is right for you and weigh up the pros and cons, if you decide to go ahead you will then book and confirm your surgery date. We know that this is a big step and we appreciate that you may want to take time to do more research and think about your decision. This is why we also have a 14-day ‘cooling off’ period in place, which means you can change your mind about the procedure after booking within that period.  If you decided to carry on and go through with the procedure, you will come back to the clinic around 3 weeks before their surgery date to see one of our lovely nurses who will complete a full pre-operation assessment. A week before your surgery date, we’ll email you an admission letter which will tell you what time to arrive on the day of surgery as well as what time to stop eating and drinking and what to bring with you.

    YOUR SURGERY/TREATMENT

Many cosmetic surgery companies can appear impressive, meeting with patients in lavish ‘sales’ consulting rooms. However, once a procedure is booked, patients often find that they are sent to a hospital where the company has simply rented temporary space to perform the procedure. This is not the case at New Birkdale. Your surgery will be carried out in our very own private hospital, and your pre-op and post-op recovery will take place in our ward.

Everyone in the theatre will introduce themselves to you before the anaesthetist gets on and sends you off to sleep, they’ll be by your side throughout the whole procedure. The type of surgery will depend on the length of operation and recovery time. Our nurse manager will make the decision on which room your recovery will take place in and this will be dependent on what procedure you’re having, what medication you’re on and any special care you may need.

Most of our theatre lists are all planned as day cases, so if it’s just a straightforward procedure you will be discharged on the same day. If it’s a slightly more complicated procedure needing longer recovery then you may need an overnight stay which we will arrange.

    POST OPERATIVE CARE

    woman looking relaxed

Once the decision has been made to discharge you, you’ll be given an out-of-hours phone number (24-hour care line) for the nurse manager as well as any medication and painkillers that may be needed to aid your full recovery. You will also receive a post-op care leaflet with tips on what you can and, most importantly, can’t do during your post-op recovery.

You may also be given a date and time to come back and see the nurse, which is normally 1 week after surgery. At this appointment, the nurse will remove the dressings and just check that everything is healing ok. She may redress them, but most of the time, everyone should be healing ok enough to leave the dressings off.

You’ll see the surgeon between 4 and 6 weeks post-op and if everything is fine at that appointment then the surgeon will discharge the patient and there’s no need for them to come back. But if they do want to come back, or if they have any concerns or worries, then they’re more than welcome to. They have aftercare cover for 1 year, with all appointments to see the surgeon, nurse, and staff within that year free of charge.

Post-operative consultations by our nursing team are free of charge for life. Post-operative consultations by your surgeon are free of charge for one year post-operatively.

Remember that every patient’s journey is unique so the process will be tailored to you and your specific needs so if you have any further questions, please contact us.

    Hair Loss Help

Few things can affect someone’s confidence more than losing their hair. It’s often a huge part of who they are and, whether you’re male or female, hair loss or thinning (whatever the cause) can cause a lot of upset and worry.

We all lose hair every day – usually between 50 and 100 – but what if you notice it’s worse for you?

woman looking shocked her hair loss

Hair loss isn’t usually anything to be worried about, but occasionally it can be a sign of a medical condition. Some types of hair loss are permanent, like male and female pattern baldness. This type of hair loss usually runs in the family.

Other types of hair loss may be temporary and can be caused by:

    • an illness
    • stress
    • cancer treatment
    • weight loss
    • iron deficiency

The first step if you’re concerned about what’s happening on your head should be your GP especially if:

    • you have sudden hair loss
    • you develop bald patches
    • you’re losing hair in clumps
    • your head also itches and burns

They’ll be able to investigate and get to the bottom of what’s going on.

If it’s a permanent condition then you’ll be talked thought what options you have – some treatments are available on the NHS if your hair loss is causing you distress but many are not. Tattooing, wigs and medication are all options but for some people a hair transplant is the best option, however not everyone will be able to undergo this process.

    Wayne Rooney hair implants

When it was first revealed that Wayne Rooney was undergoing treatment for hair loss there was a lot of finger pointing and giggling. But what happened afterwards was like an awakening as scores of men and woman became aware of a treatment that could potentially help them.

    Some key points:

The colour of your hair is important – especially how it relates to your underlying skin colour. The less contrast there is between hair and scalp colour, the better a candidate you will be for a hair transplant, as there will be increased potential for better coverage.

Hair calibre – or cross-sectional area – is incredibly important in identifying the best candidates for hair transplants. The appearance of baldness, particularly where the hair is thinning but still evident, is due to light penetrating past sparse or absent hair, and then being reflected off the scalp. So, the thicker the hair that is in place to block the light, the less the appearance of baldness will be.

The shape of your individual hairs is also important. Generally speaking, the more curl or wave your hair has, this will grant more coverage to the scalp. An excellent example of this is Afro-Caribbean hair, which tends to be tightly wound or kinky – and therefore has wonderful coverage properties, as it stands thick and mat-like above the scalp, blocking the light.

Cost – Hair transplantation is a long term solution to a long term problem. Several surgeries might be needed to achieve the result you are looking for, so it is of paramount importance that you ensure that you can see the process through. A hair transplant isn’t something you can pull out of once you’ve started, nor can you sporadically have a surgery when you’ve got some spare cash. If you don’t have the money to go all the way, you could end up looking worse than before you started.

    Breast Implants and Pregnancy

You’re late, you take the test, you’re excited…congratulations you’ve got a little baby on the way and your family is growing! It’s an exciting time and pregnancy brings with it a great deal of joy but also worry – especially if you’re a first time Mum. If you’ve undergone breast surgery then you may have a few more questions as the news sinks in.

There seems to be a lot of confusion when it comes to pregnancy and boob jobs, so allow us to clarify the impact that pregnancy has on your breast implants.

How Long Should I Have To Wait After Surgery Before I Get Breast Augmentation?

A common question that women have when planning their breast augmentation is ‘how long after breast augmentation can I get pregnant’, which is important to know if you plan on starting a family.

In most cases, your surgeon will advise you to delay breast augmentation if you are planning to become pregnant in the very near future. Still, some pregnancies come as quite a surprise, and breast augmentation recovery may still be in progress when it happens. If you become pregnant after breast implants have been very recently placed, you should speak to your surgeon as well as your gynaecologist to discuss any concerns you have as well as any special precautions you can take to ensure your healing continues smoothly and successfully.

Can I Breastfeed After Breast Surgery?

One of the most talked about issues is whether to breastfeed or not and that question might play on your mind a little more if you’ve had breast augmentation – not only should you breastfeed but will you be able to?

If you’re a first-time Mum then (like all other women) you won’t know whether or not you have the ability to breast feed but only in very rare cases will your breast enlargement surgery affect the outcome. The placement of your implants can also affect your ability to breastfeed. To reduce the risk of milk duct damage, opt for incisions being made in the fatty tissue under the breast.

Once you begin to breastfeed after augmentation, it’s best to closely monitor your milk supply to ensure baby is getting enough nourishment. Women who do face problems in breastfeeding often find it’s an issue related to milk supply such as difficulty passing the milk through the breast, reduced let-down (milk ejection) response, or low supply. (Of course, underproduction of milk and let-down issues are common troubles for many women regardless of implant status.)

    Will My Breasts Change Shape?

While breasts do increase in size due to pregnancy, their engorgement won’t interfere with your implants. Lots of women have reported that their implants appeared more “natural looking” post-pregnancy. Breast augmentation usually gives a perkier looking shape, and the fullness at the top of the implant may seem more deflated due to loss of skin elasticity post-pregnancy. The size of your breast implants, as well as the size your breasts were before surgery, may also play a factor in your outcome after pregnancy.

    Will I Need More Surgery?

No two women are the same but it’s natural for your body to change during pregnancy, and it is not abnormal for there to be changes to your physical appearance after childbirth. Your body just went through a hormone-induced triathlon, so don’t be unkind to yourself by expecting changes overnight. The best advice is to wait until around 6 months after your baby is born (longer if you are still breastfeeding) before you decide on whether you think you need another procedure such as skin tightening.

Remember if you have any questions or concerns over your breast augmentation whether you’ve fallen pregnant or are planning on starting a family and considering surgery then speak to your surgeon here at the New Birkdale Clinic, they’ll be more than happy to talk through all your options.

    Make Up Your Face

If you have hooded eyelids, you know how difficult it can make applying your makeup and you’ve probably spent a lot of time struggling to find a solution that works perfectly for you. Having hooded eyelids basically means you have an extra fold of skin that hangs over the crease of your eye. This makes your eyelid look smaller, but can also cause big problems when trying to achieve your own unique look that emphasises your beauty.

When you have hooded eyes it can be difficult to master particular looks. Because of the lack of lid space, applying eye shadow is a real pain, but doing winged liner, a cut crease, and other fabulous styles can become so difficult that most people just don’t bother. You want to create your own style and go out looking good, but instead you end up with makeup smears and smudges because your eyelashes are touching your brow bone along with other issues. Hooded eyelids take away your freedom to have fun and get creative with your makeup.

Eyelid surgery is one of the most simple and common cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. An excellent solution for hooded eyelids, a blepharoplasty procedure, also known as eyelid reduction surgery, removes excess skin and fat around the eye. The operation is an eyelid lift, and can give patients a more youthful look, correct vision problems, and helping with a number of medical problems like migraines.

People have hooded eyelids for a number of different reasons. A lot of the time it’s a simple case of genetics, but age and over-tiredness can contribute as well. Hooded eyelids can make people self-conscious about their appearance. They hurt confidence, and when you want to treat yourself by glamming up your face, your eyelids get in the way again! If this sounds familiar to you, a blepharoplasty eyelid lift might be for you.

WHAT’S INVOLVED WITH UPPER EYELID SURGERY?

For the upper eyelid surgery, your surgeon will make small skin incisions across the crease of your eyelid, removing or adjusting the extra tissue from the sagging skin. The result is a smoother eyelid with no lines or wrinkles, and the scarring will be hidden in the eyelid crease and lash line. You’ll be under general or local anaesthetic the entire time, and it should only take about an hour to complete. You can even go home the same day! That’s how easy it is.

Afterwards, we’ll remove your stitches within 3-5 days. In terms of recovery time, you’ll be able to return to work a week later. You shouldn’t drive in this time either. By then, your swelling and bruising should have calmed down. Use a cold compress or ice pack to help reduce the swelling even faster! You might experience some pink scars, numb eyelids or watery eyes, but don’t worry: they should all clear up within a few weeks of the operation.

Now, back onto the subject of makeup: as much as you may want to, patients should refrain from putting on makeup around the eyes after surgery. It’s a pain. You’ve just solved your eye makeup problems – problems you might have had your entire life – and now all you want is to make the most of it and play around with different techniques. Not to mention the fact that you might want to use a bit of makeup to cover your bruising and swelling. If you need contact lenses, make sure you don’t wear these either for a week after surgery.

It’s really important that you don’t put on makeup while your scars are healing. Keep the scars clean and dry until your stitches are out. Makeup tends to attract bacteria which means there’s a risk of getting an infection. Needless to say, you want to avoid an infection around your eye. But even if it doesn’t become infected, makeup is going to irritate your eye around the incision area.

    TIME TO HAVE SOME FUN

Once you’re all clear, it’ll be time for you to explore your new found freedom. You’ll have a more youthful appearance, and the increased eyelid space and smoother skin around your eyes are going to make putting on makeup easier than it ever was with hooded eyelids. You’ll be able to play around with makeup techniques that have always eluded you, and you’ve got a newfound chance to experiment and find a unique style to enhance your eyes’ features!

Start applying that mascara! Where it used to smudge against your brow bone, you can now use as much as you want and whatever brand you like. If your options were limited to anti-smudge and smear, those restrictions have been lifted! Using eye shadow when you have hooded eyelids is a huge pain, so now’s the time to enjoy playing around with different styles. If you’ve never seen yourself with smoky eyes, make sure you try it out and you might just find your new favourite look!
