    A Guide to Mid-face Lifts

A mid-face lift, also known as a cheek lift, is a surgical procedure that lifts the middle third of the face, including the cheeks, under-eye area, and upper mouth.

It’s a great way to reverse early signs of ageing by rejuvenating the underlying facial muscles and removing extra tissue.

In your mid-age, the area under your eyes and cheeks becomes flatter and looks worn out. This is because the tissues underneath the skin gradually gravitate downwards, causing a detached pattern between the cheeks and lower lid and it can make you  look older and worn out.

To get rid of these early signs of ageing, a mid-face lift and cheek lift can be your rescue. The process involves minimal incision and downtime of around two weeks.

When Should You Get a Mid-face Lift?

If you want to get a mid-face lift but you are not sure if you need one, here are some signs that motivate people to undergo the procedure.

Heavy and saggy cheeks and under eyes

If you see your cheeks have visibly lost volume or the under eyes feel hollow, then a mid-face lift can help you get rid of the saggy skin. It can also help you get rid of crow’s feet and shrunken skin.

The procedure involves firming the skin on cheeks by repositioning the tissues and fat pads. This gives the desired contour to the face and redistributes the volume evenly.

    Deep nasolabial lines

If you have wrinkles and deep lines that run from your nose to your mouth, a midface and cheek lift can be highly beneficial.

Nasolabial lines are more clearly visible when you smile or laugh. If the cheeks become saggy, these creases become deeper. By lifting the cheeks up and adding more volume to them, the cheeks can look fuller and firmer.

    Ill-defined cheeks

Over the years, fat and tissues in the mid-face area lose volume and gravitate downwards. This can make the cheeks look less defined and saggy. A mid-face lift helps fix the tissue placement which can give a more contoured appearance.

    Flat cheek pads

A cheek lift elevates the cheek fat pads that can give high defined cheekbones, highlighting the high points of the face.

A cheek pad gives shape and fullness to the cheeks that gives a young look to the face. Due to gravity pulling the skin down over the years and less elasticity in skin, cheeks start looking flat and hollow.

During surgery, these malar fat pads are repositioned to make the skin firmer and tighter. This gives an elevated look to the cheeks.

Someone looking at the results of their procedure

    Disproportionate face

Mid-face lifts or cheek lifts help give better proportions to your facial features. Along with cheeks and under eyes, it can make your jawline and nose look sharper.

With ageing, the cheeks loose volume and can make the lower and upper parts of the face look disproportionate. As a mid-face lift addresses the centre and main area of the face, few changes can redefine the whole face. It can give a smoother transition between cheeks and lower eyelids.

As discussed, the surgery can also make the face look less heavy with lighter nasolabial lines.

Need a natural lift without a full facelift

A mid-face lift only lifts up the middle third of the face which gives a subtle and natural change to the face. It works best if your signs of ageing are easy to reverse and don’t need any drastic change. These can be individuals in their 40s, 50s and early 60s.

A full face lift is for reshaping a full face and is recommended for people for whom mid-face lift can’t reverse ageing and all facial features need work.

    Poor results from non-surgical options

If you’ve tried non-surgical options, like fillers, but don’t see any long lasting changes, then mid-face lift is the right choice for you.

Some more natural benefits of getting a mid-face lift

    Small incision across the hairline

The process involves a small incision around the lower eye and within the hairline. This makes any scars look less visible.

    High tech procedure

Some endoscopic methods insert a small camera through the incisions, allowing the surgeons to reposition the tissues with minimal cuts on the skin. This helps reduce tissue disruption.

    Prepping for surgery

    Minimal downtime

The recovery time is shorter as the mid-face lift focuses on the mid part of the face. The swelling and pain can go in as little as 10 days. A patient can be back to any physical workout in around 3-4 weeks.

How is a mid-face lift performed?

The process involves repositioning the facial tissues and uplifting the cheek pads. After the anesthesia, small incisions are made around lower eyelids and the hairline. An incision along the lower eyelid helps in accessing the cheeks without a big cut. If the incision is made in the hairline, the surgery can be performed without disrupting the lower face or neck.

An alternative to these can be an endoscopic incision, which involves installing a small camera through a small incision in the scalp. These are usually used for face and brow lifts.

Once the incision is made, the surgeon examines the tissues that need to be repositioned and lifts them up along with the fat pads that can lift up the cheeks.

Other than tissues, the retaining ligaments also contribute to skin rejuvenation. These anatomic structures are present across the main facial features and surgeons release them to achieve the desired goals for the skin.

Surgeons also use sutures to lift the deep layered facial tissues. The whole process can take around 2-5 hours and the patient can go back home the same day as surgery.

    Recovery Period for Mid-Face Lift

Most patients can return to light activities in 1-2 weeks with full recovery taking around 4-5 weeks. The final and actual shape of the face is fully developed only after 3 to 6 months when the face is fully settled to its redefined shape and all the swelling is gone. The scars should also be usually gone by this time.

There can be discomfort with facial pain, movement and speech for 2-3 days following your surgery. The pain is not unbearable and should subside soon after. All the medicines, including painkillers should be taken on time and as prescribed.

Someone getting a consultation for a procedure

Frequent visits need to be made for changing dressings and improvements in swelling/bruises. Doctors may also use bandages to minimise swelling and support the new shape of the face. It’s advised to use cold compression for relief in swelling and bruising.

Once the face starts getting rid of bandages, it might look a bit artificial as the cheeks lifted up too high. This will soon start looking more natural as the face settles down and regains a less sharp shape.

Complications of Getting a Mid-Face Lift

    Medical conditions

Mid-face and cheek lifts are not recommended to people having severe medical conditions, like high blood pressure, diabetes, skin allergies, etc. Consult our specialised surgeons at New Birkdale Clinic and get the best advice on the potential complications as per your health condition.

    Smoking and tobacco

Smoking and tobacco consumption can make the process more complicated. Tobacco and nicotine products make the blood flow less to the skin, making less oxygen and nutrients supply. This can cause adverse effects on the skin when undergoing surgery. Smoking will also slow down the healing of tissues, scars and swelling.

    Someone smoking

    Risk of infections

Sometimes, there’s also a risk of infections around the incision areas. Antibiotics and all the post-care instructions should be followed seriously. Our team of doctors help you sail smoothly through this journey with the best care possible.

    Poor healing

Poor healing from surgery can lead to unhealed scars that can leave some marks. Using doctor-prescribed ointments and antibiotics should help.

    Medications

Some blood-thinning medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen, nurofen, should be avoided for a few weeks before and after the surgery. Having these medicines could cause excessive bleeding, delayed healing, more bruising after the surgery.

    What is a Mummy Makeover?

When you have a baby your body can go through significant changes.

While these are completely natural changes, they could cause you to become dissatisfied with how certain parts of your body appear.

In cosmetic surgery, there is a set of procedures which, when performed together are known as a mummy makeover.

The mummy makeover is usually carried out to help alleviate the change your body experiences as a consequence of motherhood.

In this guide, we will discuss the details of a mummy makeover as well as its benefits.

    What is a Mummy Makeover?

A mummy makeover is a comprehensive cosmetic surgery procedure designed to restore your body to its pre-pregnancy shape.

This makeover typically includes a combination of surgeries such as a tummy tuck, breast lift or augmentation and liposuction.

The goal is to address the physical changes that often occur after pregnancy and childbirth, such as sagging breasts, excess abdominal skin and stubborn fat deposits.

By combining multiple procedures into one surgical session, a mummy makeover offers a more efficient and effective solution for women seeking to rejuvenate their bodies and boost their self-confidence.

    Mummy Makeover

Common Procedures Involved in a Mummy Makeover

Here are the most common procedures included:

    Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while also tightening the abdominal muscles.

This surgery addresses issues such as a protruding belly, loose skin, and weakened or separated abdominal muscles, which are common after pregnancy and significant weight loss.

    What are the benefits?

    • A flatter and firmer abdominal profile.
    • Improved posture due to tightened abdominal muscles.
    • Removal of stretch marks and excess skin.
    • Can significantly enhance your body contour, providing a more youthful and toned appearance.
    • Can alleviate discomfort caused by loose, hanging skin and improve overall confidence and self-esteem.

    Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure aimed at raising and reshaping sagging breasts.

The surgery involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to create a more youthful and elevated breast contour.

This procedure is particularly beneficial for women whose breasts have lost their shape and firmness due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, ageing, or significant weight fluctuations.

    What are the benefits?

    • Firmer, perkier breasts with a more youthful shape and improved symmetry.
    • Can reposition the nipples to a more natural and aesthetically pleasing height.
    • Will enhance the appearance of the breasts, restore confidence, and improve the fit of clothing and bras.

    Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to increase the size and improve the shape of the breasts using implants or fat transfer.

This surgery is ideal for women who desire fuller breasts or have experienced a loss of breast volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.

    What are the benefits?

    • Enhanced breast size and shape.
    • Improved body proportions.
    • Increased self-confidence.
    • Can correct asymmetry and restore volume to breasts that have become deflated.
    • Can enhance the overall balance of your figure, making you feel more attractive and confident in your appearance.

    Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, and neck.

This procedure involves the use of a suction device to extract fat, resulting in a slimmer and more contoured appearance.

    What are the benefits?

    • The removal of stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise.
    • Improved body contours.
    • Enhanced overall body proportions.
    • Can help to sculpt the body, providing a more toned and defined appearance.
    • Can also boost self-esteem and confidence by achieving a more desired body shape.

    Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a procedure designed to reduce the size of overly large breasts by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin.

This surgery is often sought by women experiencing physical discomfort, pain, or self-consciousness due to their large breast size.

    What are the benefits?

    • Alleviation of physical discomfort such as back, neck, and shoulder pain.
    • Improved ability to engage in physical activities.
    • Enhanced overall breast appearance.
    • Can also improve posture.
    • Can reduce skin irritation.
    • This will provide a more balanced and proportionate figure.
    • Can greatly enhance self-confidence and quality of life.

    Body Lift

A body lift is a comprehensive surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from various areas of the body, such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and lower back.

This surgery is particularly beneficial if you have experienced significant weight loss and are left with loose, sagging skin.

    What are the benefits?

    • A more toned and youthful body contour.
    • Improved skin elasticity.
    • Enhanced overall body shape.
    • Reduces the appearance of sagging skin.
    • Can boost self-esteem and confidence by providing a more aesthetically pleasing and proportional body.

What is the Best Age for a Mummy Makeover?

There isn’t one ideal age to have a mummy makeover.

An adult at practically any age can have a mummy makeover and enjoy the benefits that it provides.

The surgery is commonly performed on women between the ages of 30-40 but it’s also not unheard of for women aged 60 and above to receive a mummy makeover also.

Risks and Considerations of a Mummy Makeover

Here are the key risks and considerations:

    • Infection – Post-operative infections can occur, requiring antibiotics or additional surgery.
    • Bleeding – Excessive bleeding during or after surgery may necessitate medical intervention.
    • Anaesthesia complications – Anesthesia can cause adverse reactions, including respiratory issues and allergic reactions.
    • Scarring – All surgical procedures result in some scarring. The extent and visibility depend on individual healing processes, surgical technique, and skin type. Surgeons aim to place incisions in less visible areas, but scars are an inevitable part of surgery.
    • Poor wound healing – Some patients may experience delayed or problematic wound healing, leading to complications like wound separation or skin necrosis. Factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and certain medical conditions can exacerbate this risk.
    • Blood Clots – Immobility after surgery increases the risk of blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can become life-threatening if they travel to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
    Mummy Makeover

    What is Blepharoplasty?

As you age your body begins to change. This is especially true for the area surrounding your eyes.

There can be a build-up of fat around the eyes as you get older, or they can become more hollow.

In this post, we’ll explore the ins and outs of blepharoplasty, a procedure used in cosmetic surgery to reduce the effects of ageing around your eye area.

Whether you’re looking to address drooping eyelids, under-eye bags, or simply achieve a more youthful look, blepharoplasty offers a tailored solution to enhance your facial aesthetics.

    Let’s get into it.

    What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic or medical procedure designed to improve the appearance and function of the eyelids.

It involves the removal or repositioning of excess skin, muscle, and fat from the upper or lower eyelids, resulting in a more youthful and refreshed look.

This procedure can address issues such as droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes, and vision impairment caused by sagging skin.

    Types of Blepharoplasty

There are several types of blepharoplasty, each designed to address specific concerns or areas of the eyelids. Here are the main types:

    Upper Blepharoplasty

This procedure focuses on the upper eyelids and is typically performed to correct drooping or sagging skin that can impair vision or create a tired appearance.

It involves the removal of excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper eyelids.

    Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty targets the lower eyelids and is primarily performed to address issues such as puffiness, bags under the eyes, and wrinkles.

The procedure can involve the removal or repositioning of fat, and sometimes the tightening of the skin and muscle.

    eye-bags-removal

    Double Eyelid Surgery (Asian Blepharoplasty)

This type of blepharoplasty is popular among individuals of East Asian descent and aims to create a defined crease in the upper eyelid.

It can involve the removal or repositioning of tissue to create a double eyelid fold, enhancing the appearance of the eyes.

    Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

In this procedure, incisions are made on the inside of the lower eyelid, making them invisible from the outside.

It is typically used to remove or reposition fat without the need to remove excess skin, suitable for patients with good skin elasticity.

    Revision Blepharoplasty

Revision blepharoplasty is performed to correct or improve the results of a previous eyelid surgery.

This can address issues such as asymmetry, overcorrection, under-correction, or scarring from the initial procedure.

    Functional Blepharoplasty

Unlike cosmetic blepharoplasty, functional blepharoplasty is performed to improve the patient’s vision by removing drooping skin that obstructs the visual field.

It is often covered by insurance if deemed medically necessary.

    Laser Blepharoplasty

Laser blepharoplasty uses a laser instead of a scalpel to make incisions.

The laser can help to reduce bleeding and bruising and may promote faster healing. It can be used for both upper and lower eyelid procedures.

    Endoscopic Brow Lift with Blepharoplasty

This combination procedure addresses both the upper eyelids and the brow area.

An endoscopic brow lift raises sagging brows, while the blepharoplasty removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, providing a more comprehensive rejuvenation of the upper face.

    The Blepharoplasty Procedure

    Pre-surgery Consultation and Evaluation

During this session we evaluate your medical history, discuss your aesthetic goals, and perform a detailed examination of the eyelid region.

This evaluation helps determine the procedure’s suitability and identify any potential risks or complications.

Your surgeon will also discuss the different types of blepharoplasty (upper, lower, or both) and what each entails, helping you to set realistic expectations.

    Preparation Steps Before the Surgery

Prior to the surgery, you will receive specific instructions to prepare for the procedure.

This may include guidelines on medications to avoid (such as blood thinners and certain supplements), smoking cessation, and arranging for someone to drive you home post-surgery.

You may also be advised to undergo certain preoperative tests and to follow a skincare regimen to ensure optimal skin health.

It’s important to avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight on the day before surgery to prepare for anaesthesia.

    The Surgical Process

    Step 1: Anaesthesia

The procedure typically begins with the administration of anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery.

This can be either local anaesthesia with sedation, where you’re awake but relaxed, or general anaesthesia, where you’re completely asleep.

    Step 2: Incision Techniques

Depending on whether the surgery is for the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, the surgeon will make precise incisions.

For upper blepharoplasty, incisions are usually made within the natural crease of the upper eyelid.

For lower blepharoplasty, incisions may be made just below the lower lash line or inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival incision).

Step 3: Removal or Repositioning of Fat and Skin

Through these incisions, the surgeon will remove or reposition excess fat deposits, skin, and sometimes muscle.

In upper eyelid surgery, this helps to correct sagging and improve the contour of the eyelid. In lower eyelid surgery, it addresses the puffiness and bags under the eyes.

The goal is to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance while maintaining natural eyelid function.

     Step 4: Closing the Incisions

After the necessary adjustments are made, the surgeon carefully closes the incisions with fine sutures, surgical glue, or skin adhesives.

This helps to minimise scarring and ensure a smooth healing process.

In some cases, the sutures are designed to dissolve on their own, while in others, they may need to be removed during a follow-up visit.

    What is Blepharoplasty

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Blepharoplasty?

Recovery from blepharoplasty generally spans a few weeks to several months, with a noticeable improvement in the early stages and gradual refinement over time.

In the first few days post-surgery, you may experience the most significant swelling and bruising, which can be managed with cold compresses and head elevation.

Sutures, if used, are usually removed within a week.

Most patients feel comfortable resuming normal activities and returning to work within 1-2 weeks, although strenuous activities should be avoided for at least a month.

Full recovery, where residual swelling diminishes and incision lines fade, can take up to six months.

Throughout this period, follow-up appointments with the surgeon ensure proper healing and optimal results.

What are the risks of Blepharoplasty?

As with any surgical procedure, blepharoplasty comes with its set of potential risks and complications.

Understanding these risks helps you make informed decisions and take necessary precautions. These risks include:

    • Infection – Post-surgical infections are a concern with any surgery, including blepharoplasty. Signs of infection include increased redness, swelling, pain, and discharge at the incision sites.
    • Scarring – While surgeons make incisions in natural creases to minimise visible scarring, some patients may still develop noticeable scars. The extent of scarring can vary depending on individual healing processes and skin types.
    • Dry Eyes – After blepharoplasty, you may experience dryness, irritation, or a gritty sensation in your eyes. This is often temporary and can be managed with lubricating eye drops, but in rare cases, it can persist and require further treatment.
    • Asymmetry – Achieving perfect symmetry in facial surgery can be challenging. There is a risk of slight asymmetry where one eyelid may appear different from the other in shape or size. This may necessitate additional procedures to correct.

A Complete Guide to Gender Reassignment Surgery

Gender Reassignment Surgery (GRS) consists of operations that contribute to a person’s sex change.

In the UK, this type of surgery has increased 5 fold since the year 2000.

These procedures can be complex and can vary…in this article, we will go into detail about GRS, including the pros, cons and costs.

    Let’s get into it.

    What is Gender Reassignment Surgery?

    hormone therapy

GRS is a medical procedure or series of procedures that helps you transition from your assigned sex at birth to your identified gender.

This surgery is typically one component of a broader gender transition process, which may also include:

    • Hormone therapy.
    • Mental health support.
    • Social changes (adopting a new name and changing legal documents).

    Types of Gender Reassignment Surgery

The specific types of surgeries involved can vary widely depending on whether you are transitioning from male to female (MTF) or female to male (FTM).

Here are the main types of gender reassignment surgeries:

    Male-to-Female (MTF) Surgery

breast augmentation for gender reassignment therapy

This refers to when a male patient wants to transition to a female, they may go under the following procedures.

    • Vaginoplasty – The construction of a vagina using skin and tissue from the penis and scrotum. May include labiaplasty (creation of the labia) and clitoroplasty (creation of a clitoris).
    • Orchiectomy – The removal of the testes, often performed as a standalone procedure or as part of vaginoplasty.
    • Penectomy – The removal of the penis, usually done in conjunction with vaginoplasty.
    • Breast AugmentationThe placement of breast implants to create a more traditionally feminine chest appearance.
    • Facial Feminisation Surgery (FFS) – A set of surgical procedures to alter facial features to appear more traditionally feminine. This can include rhinoplasty, brow lift, cheek augmentation, and jaw contouring.
    • Voice Surgery – Surgical procedures to raise the pitch of the voice, often involving the vocal cords.
    • Tracheal Shave – The reduction of the Adam’s apple to create a smoother neck profile.

    Female-to-Male (FTM) Surgery

    gender reassignment surgery

This refers to when a female patient wants to transition to a male, they may go under the following procedures.

    • Mastectomy – The removal of breast tissue to create a more masculine chest, often referred to as “top surgery.”
    • Phalloplasty – The construction of a penis using tissue from other parts of the body (such as the forearm or thigh). This is a complex procedure that may require multiple stages.
    • Metoidioplasty – The construction of a penis using the clitoris, which has been enlarged through hormone therapy. This procedure is typically less extensive than phalloplasty and results in a smaller penis.
    • Hysterectomy – The removal of the uterus, which may be performed as part of the transition process to align physical anatomy with gender identity.
    • Oophorectomy – The removal of the ovaries, often done in conjunction with hysterectomy.
    • Scrotoplasty – The construction of a scrotum, often involving the insertion of testicular implants.
    • Urethral Lengthening – A procedure to extend the urethra through the newly constructed penis, allowing for urination through the penis.

    Benefits of Gender Reassignment Surgery

    improved mental health

GRS offers numerous benefits if you’re experiencing gender dysphoria, helping to align your physical appearance with your gender identity.

Here are some of the key benefits:

    Alleviation of Gender Dysphoria

GRS can significantly reduce or eliminate the distress associated with gender dysphoria, improving overall mental health.

Aligning physical characteristics with gender identity can enhance body comfort and self-perception.

    Improved Mental Health

You may experience a reduction in anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues post-surgery.

Feeling more congruent with your gender identity can lead to greater emotional stability and happiness.

    Enhanced Quality of Life

Aligning your physical appearance with your gender identity often leads to increased satisfaction with life.

As a result, you can increase your confidence in yourself and your appearance.

This enhanced confidence and comfort in social settings can improve relationships with family, friends, and colleagues.

    Personal Empowerment

GRS provides a sense of control and empowerment over your body and life decisions.

Successfully undergoing surgery can be a significant personal achievement and a milestone in your transition journey.

Leading to an overall better quality of life.

Risks and Considerations of Gender Reassignment Surgery

Here are some of the key risks and considerations:

    Surgical Risks

As with any surgery, there is a risk of infection at the surgical site, which may require antibiotics or additional medical intervention.

Excessive bleeding during or after surgery can occur, sometimes necessitating blood transfusions.

There is also a risk of developing blood clots, which can lead to complications such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

Some people may also have adverse reactions to anaesthesia. This includes allergic reactions, respiratory issues, or cardiovascular problems.

    Postoperative Complications

You may experience delayed or problematic wound healing, leading to further medical treatment.

Scarring occurs from GRS  which may be aesthetically concerning or cause physical discomfort.

There is also a risk of nerve damage, which can lead to numbness, pain, or loss of sensation in the affected areas.

For MTF surgeries, there may be complications related to urinary function, such as difficulty urinating or incontinence.

    Psychological and Social Considerations

    Surgery can be emotionally taxing.

Therefore, it’s important to have realistic expectations about the outcomes of surgery.

While GRS can significantly alleviate gender dysphoria, it may not resolve all personal or social issues.

Strong social support from family, friends, and support groups can be crucial for emotional well-being during and after the transition.

    Long-Term Health Considerations

Many patients will need to continue hormone therapy after surgery, which requires regular medical monitoring and potential adjustments.

Regular follow-up care is necessary to monitor for long-term complications and ensure overall health.

    Financial Considerations

GRS can be expensive, and not all insurance plans cover the procedures. It’s important to understand the financial implications and explore insurance coverage options.

You may want additional surgeries for optimal results, adding to the overall cost.

    Legal and Administrative Considerations

Updating legal documents (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, birth certificate) to reflect the new gender identity can be a complex process and varies depending on the country you live in.

Navigating the workplace and social environments post-transition can present challenges, and you should be prepared for varying levels of acceptance and support.

    Costs of Gender Reassignment Surgery

In the UK, the cost of gender reassignment surgery can vary significantly based on the type of surgery and whether it is accessed through the NHS or privately.

Here is a selection of the varying costs associated with GRS:

    Private Treatment Costs

Here is a selection of some of the surgeries relating to GRS and their estimated costs:

    • Vaginoplasty – Typically costs between £10,000 and £20,000.
    • Breast augmentation –  Generally ranges from £5,000 to £8,000.
    • Phalloplasty or metoidioplasty – This can be significantly more expensive, often around £60,000.
    • Double mastectomy – Usually costs between £5,000 and £8,000.

    Additional Costs

    What is Rhinoplasty (Nose Job)?

If you are interested in changing the shape of your nose then you might want to consider rhinoplasty

The data reveals a 102% rise in cosmetic procedures in 2022

Rhinoplasty has seen a 72% increase, and it is now the most popular cosmetic procedure in men.

These statistics show the appetite people have for this particular cosmetic surgery. In this article, we will look at what rhinoplasty is in more detail as well as the costs associated with it.

    Let’s get into it.

    What is Rhinoplasty?

    rhinoplasty surgeon working on patient

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job or nasal rhinoplasty surgery, is a surgical procedure that is designed to change the shape of your nose.

This procedure can be performed for two reasons:

    • Aesthetic – To improve the balance of facial features.
    • Functional – If you struggle to breathe due to nasal obstruction or other issues you were either born with or developed.

Rhinoplasty involves reshaping the bone, cartilage, or skin of the nose. In some cases, it may involve making alterations to all three.

    Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty techniques can be broadly categorised into two main approaches:

    Open Rhinoplasty Procedure

This technique involves making an incision across the columella.

This is the tissue that separates the nostrils, allowing the surgeon to lift the skin off the nasal structure and have a clear view of the underlying anatomy.

This approach is often used for more complex cases where extensive reshaping is required.

The open technique provides greater precision and control but results in a small, often barely visible scar on the columella.

    Closed Rhinoplasty Procedure

Also known as endonasal rhinoplasty, this technique involves making all incisions within the nostrils, avoiding external scars.

The surgeon works through these internal incisions to reshape the nose.

This approach is generally used for less complex procedures and offers the advantage of reduced swelling and a shorter recovery time.

    Types of Rhinoplasty

    different types of rhinoplasty procedure

Here is a selection of other procedures that are used in rhinoplasty procedures:

    Tipplasty (Nose Tip Rhinoplasty)

This is a specialised type of surgery focused solely on reshaping the nasal tip. It often involves adjustments to the cartilage.

This procedure is ideal if you’re unhappy with the proportion of the end of your nose in comparison to the rest of your facial features.

Tipplasty can involve techniques such as:

    • Cartilage Removal – To reduce the size or width of the tip.
    • Cartilage Grafting – To add volume, enhance projection, or improve the shape.
    • Suturing Techniques – To refine and reposition the existing cartilage for better definition and symmetry.

    Septoplasty

A septoplasty procedure involves straightening out the septum. This is the part of the nose that separates the two nostrils and it is made from bone and cartilage.

The septum is around 7cm long in adults.

If you have a deviated septum your nose can look crooked or bent. This can then block the airflow going into your lungs and cause breathing problems.

    Revision Rhinoplasty

It is a secondary surgical process which is done if you are unhappy with your first surgery. It is usually done if the patient thinks the first nose job did not meet their aesthetic or functional requirements. It is a bit more complicated process than the first surgery as it involves dealing with a scarred area and an altered nasal structure.

Aesthetic concerns include, over corrected or under corrected nose, disproportionate changes or a bent shape. Functional concerns include, breathing problems, healing complications, scarred tissues or changes caused by accidents/trauma.

    Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

Non-surgical methods can be a great option for those who prefer less invasive techniques. The downside is that they have more limitations compared to their surgical counterparts.

A great example of this would be if you wanted to reduce the size of your nose.

Non-surgical treatments wouldn’t be a great option, but you could use injectable fillers as a way to smooth out bumps and alter parts of your nose.

Non-surgical options are temporary and best suited for minor adjustments.

    What is the Rhinoplasty Procedure

    rhinoplasty feature image

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the rhinoplasty procedure:

    1. Consultation and Planning

The process begins with a consultation where our surgeon evaluates your nasal structure, discusses your goals, and reviews your medical history.

Digital imaging can be used to show what the outcome of your surgery will look like.

After the consultation, our surgeon will create a surgical plan tailored to your specific needs and requirements.

Which will help you achieve the goals and aspirations for your surgery.

    1. Preoperative Preparation

You’ll undergo a thorough medical evaluation, including blood tests and sometimes a nasal endoscopy.

You are given preoperative instructions, including which medications to avoid and guidelines on eating and drinking before surgery.

This helps the surgery go as smoothly as possible and to ensure you’re comfortable throughout.

    1.  Anaesthesia

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery and your preference.

Our staff will carefully monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure.

You’ll be under constant medical supervision ensuring your surgery can run just as planned.

    1. Incisions

Incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scars.

An additional small incision is made across the columella (the tissue between the nostrils). This allows better access to the nasal structures and is often used for more complex cases.

    1. Reshaping the Nose Structure
    lady post rhinoplasty procedure.

Our surgeon may remove bone or cartilage to reduce the size of the nose.

In some cases, cartilage grafts (often from the septum or ear) are used to augment nasal structures.

If you have a deviated septum causing breathing issues, your surgeon will straighten it and reduce projections inside the nose to improve airflow.

    1. Closing the Incisions

The incisions are closed with sutures, which may be absorbable or need to be removed later.

Internal tubes or splints may be placed inside the nose to support the septum.

External splints or bandages are applied to maintain the new shape during healing.

    1. Recovery

After surgery, you are monitored as you wake from anaesthesia. In some cases, you can go home the same day you’ve had your surgery.

Regular follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing and remove any non-absorbable sutures and splints.

Swelling and bruising are common and can take several weeks to subside. Final results may not be fully visible until a year after surgery.

    before and after rhinoplasty.

Cost of Rhinoplasty in the UK

The cost of rhinoplasty in the UK can vary widely depending on several factors such as:

    • The complexity of the procedure.
    • The surgeon’s experience.
    • The location of the clinic.
    • Whether it is being performed for cosmetic or medical reasons.

Here is a look at the estimated costs of rhinoplasty surgery:

    • Primary Rhinoplasty – The cost for a primary rhinoplasty (first-time surgery) in the UK typically ranges from £4,000 to £7,000.
    • Revision Rhinoplasty – This can be more complex and expensive, ranging from £6,000 to £10,000.
    • Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty – A non-surgical rhinoplasty, which uses fillers to temporarily alter the shape of the nose, can cost between £300 and £800.

These procedures will usually require a deposit and may also offer instalment plans. For more information on rhinoplasty pricing, you can check out our facial surgery prices.

    Rhinoplasty Recovery

Nose surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic and lasts around 2 hours. This is normally followed by an overnight stay in hospital. Any incisions are sealed with soluble stitches which disappear within a week. If you have undergone open rhinoplasty then you may be left with some scarring, this is usually unnoticeable and your surgeon will discuss this with you before you decide to go ahead with your nose surgery.

It’s important to remember that recovery won’t be a quick process; your nose will be bruised and swollen after rhinoplasty and you may also experience bruising around your eyes.

You may have dressings placed inside each nostril to stop you from breathing through your nose which may need to stay there for a week post-op and you will need to breathe through your mouth during this time. You’ll also have a splint over your nose to help support it, which MUST remain there for at least a week.

It will take at least 2 weeks before the bruising begins to fade and several months before your nose settles into its new shape and common side effects include a blocked and numbed nose and light nosebleeds for around a week post-op. Most patients take 7-10 days off work following their nose job and you will not be able to take part in sport or heavy exercise for around 6 weeks so make sure you take into consideration any short term plans.

    Tummy Tuck vs Liposuction

If you exercise and eat well but still struggle to tone up your stomach area you may want to consider a tummy tuck or liposuction.

But before doing that you need to know the differences between these procedures.

They are two completely different procedures that can give you similar-looking results. However, it is important that you know the difference between them.

In the UK women underwent 93% of all cosmetic procedures recorded in 2022, a rise of 101% from 2021.

Tummy tuck (up 130%) and liposuction (up 134%) made the top five most popular procedures.

In this article, we’ll discuss both procedures and also how they differ from each other.

    What is a Tummy Tuck?

surgeon marking stomach for tummy tuck surgery

Tummy tucks (abdominoplasty) are used to improve the shape and appearance of your abdomen area.

If someone has lost large amounts of weight or has been pregnant they might gain excess skin.

This excess skin can start to sag and can be very difficult to tone.

A tummy tuck involves removing this excess skin and fat from the abdomen area.

Then the connective tissue which resides in the abdomen area under your skin is tightened up with sutures.

Two types of tummy tuck procedures are available:

    Partial Abdominoplasty

Also known as a mini tuck. This is a less extensive procedure compared to a full tummy tuck.

It’s typically recommended if you have moderate abdominal laxity and a small amount of excess skin and fat, usually below the belly button.

The incision made during a mini tummy tuck is shorter and may not require repositioning of the belly button.

Excess skin and fat are removed, and the lower abdominal muscles may be tightened if needed.

Recovery time for a mini tummy tuck is generally shorter compared to a full tummy tuck.

    Full Abdominoplasty

This is the most common type of tummy tuck procedure.

It involves making a horizontal incision across the lower abdomen, usually from hip to hip, as well as around the navel in some cases.

Excess skin and fat are removed, and the abdominal muscles are tightened if necessary.

The remaining skin is repositioned and sutured into place for a smoother, firmer abdominal contour.

This procedure is suitable for individuals with significant abdominal laxity and excess skin.

    What is Liposuction?

    liposuction surgeons performing surgery.

The liposuction procedure is used to remove stubborn fat in areas of your body. It is not just for your abdominal region but can be utilised all over your body.

Although the abdominal area would be one of the most common parts of your body to receive liposuction.

Liposuction involves sucking out fat deposits that can collect in certain areas of your body. These areas tend to be:

    • Thighs.
    • Hips.
    • Tummy.
    • Flanks.

A traditional liposuction procedure will involve going under general anaesthesia and then your surgeon would make small incisions into selected areas of your body.

Then they will insert a small tube (cannula) into the incisions. This tube is connected to a vacuum which sucks out the built-up fat in these areas of your body.

Find out how a traditional liposuction is different from vaser liposuction and which one to choose.

Learn more about the recovery process for a liposuction surgery to know how long it can take to heal.

    Other liposuction procedures include:

    Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction involves the injection of a tumescent solution into the fatty tissue before fat removal.

The solution contains a mixture of saline (sterile salt water), lidocaine (a local anaesthetic), and epinephrine (a vasoconstrictor).

Find out all about tumescent liposuction, its benefits and how it’s different from other procedures.

The tumescent solution helps to numb the area, minimise bleeding, and facilitate fat removal, making the procedure safer and more comfortable.

    Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL)

    liposuction surgery

Power-assisted liposuction utilises a specialised cannula that vibrates or oscillates mechanically to break up fat cells and facilitate their removal.

The mechanical movement of the cannula makes the fat-removal process more efficient and may reduce trauma to surrounding tissues.

    Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat cells before they are removed.

A specialised cannula emits ultrasonic waves that target and break down fat cells, making them easier to suction out.

UAL is particularly useful for areas with dense or fibrous fat deposits, such as the upper back or male chest (gynecomastia).

    Laser-Assisted Liposuction (LAL)

Laser-assisted liposuction, also known as laser lipolysis or laser lipo, involves the use of laser energy to liquefy fat cells before suctioning them out.

A laser fibre is inserted through small incisions and delivers thermal energy to the fat cells, causing them to rupture.

LAL may also stimulate collagen production, leading to skin tightening in some cases.

Key Differences Between Tummy Tuck and Liposuction

    tummy tuck before and after

    Technique

A tummy tuck procedure involves making an incision across the abdomen and potentially repositioning the belly button.

Liposuction requires making smaller incisions across the body. This means there is less scar tissue with liposuction.

    Purpose

A tummy tuck primarily focuses on removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while also tightening the abdominal muscles.

Liposuction targets localised fat deposits in specific areas of the body, including the abdomen. It does not address excess skin or muscle laxity.

    Suitability

If you want to get rid of excess skin then you are more suited to a tummy tuck.

It is often recommended for patients who have undergone significant weight loss or pregnancy and are left with loose, sagging skin.

When it comes to getting rid of fat you should choose liposuction. It is not intended for weight loss but rather for body contouring and enhancing overall body proportions.

    Results

A tummy tuck can produce dramatic improvements in abdominal contour, resulting in a flatter, firmer abdomen with reduced skin laxity and improved muscle tone.

The results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting, provided the patient maintains a stable weight and follows a healthy lifestyle.

Liposuction can lead to significant improvements in body contour by removing stubborn fat deposits and creating a more sculpted appearance.

However, it does not address excess skin or muscle laxity, so optimal results depend on the elasticity of the skin and underlying muscle tone.

    Recovery

The recovery period for a tummy tuck is typically longer compared to liposuction due to the more extensive nature of the procedure.

You may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort for several weeks, and strenuous activities should be avoided during the initial recovery phase.

The recovery time for liposuction varies depending on the extent of the procedure and the techniques used.

While some swelling and bruising are common, you can resume normal activities within a few days to weeks following liposuction.

Discover the Different Types of Plastic Surgery and their Benefits

Since modern plastic surgery first came to the fold around 200 years ago there has been a monumental shift forward in the technology and techniques available today.

Thanks to innovative technology and surgeons pushing the boundaries, there is a whole host of different types of plastic surgery available.

Thanks to the variety of plastic surgery available you have the power to change many different aspects of your body.

In this article, we will discuss the types of plastic surgery available.

    What is Plastic Surgery?

types of plastic surgery - feature image

Plastic surgery, also known as cosmetic surgery, is when you have a surgical procedure carried out to change the appearance of your body in some way.

Whilst some of these procedures are surgical they can also include non-surgical procedures.

    These include:

These non-surgical options provide effective solutions for various cosmetic concerns with minimal downtime and recovery compared to surgical procedures.

    Types of Plastic Surgery

Here are some common types of plastic surgery:

    Breast Augmentation

    breast augmentation

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of your breasts.

The surgery is typically carried out using implants filled with silicone gel or saline solution, although other techniques like fat transfer are also utilised.

The procedure involves making incisions, usually under the breast, around the areola, or in the armpit, to create a pocket for the implant.

The implant is then inserted either under the chest muscle (submuscular placement) or directly behind the breast tissue (sub-glandular placement).

Those seeking breast augmentation surgery are often dissatisfied with the size and shape of their breasts. This can happen for a number of reasons such as:

    • Genetics.
    • Pregnancy.
    • Weight loss.
    • Ageing.

A study conducted in 2020 showed that breast augmentation plastic surgery in married women could significantly improve marital satisfaction and the quality of life in married women

    Benefits of Breast Augmentation

    • Enhanced appearance – Breast augmentation can increase breast size and improve symmetry, creating a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing figure.
    • Improved self-confidence – You may experience a boost in self-esteem and body image after breast augmentation, feeling more confident in your appearance.
    • Clothing fit – With increased breast size, clothing may fit better and you may feel more comfortable and confident in various styles of clothing.
    • Correction of asymmetry – Breast augmentation can help correct asymmetrical breasts, providing a more balanced and symmetrical appearance.
    • Reconstruction after mastectomy – If you’ve undergone a mastectomy due to breast cancer or other medical reasons, breast augmentation can reconstruct the breast mound.

    Rhinoplasty

    rhinoplasty

Commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty involves reshaping the nose to improve its appearance or correct breathing problems.

The upper part of your nose is bone and the lower part is cartilage.

When reshaping the nose with rhinoplasty you are making changes to the bone, cartilage or skin. In some cases, you could be changing all three.

Rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed technique.

In an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes an incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) and lifts the skin to access the nasal structures.

In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made inside the nostrils, avoiding any external scarring.

The choice of technique depends on the specific goals of the surgery and the surgeon’s preference.

Considered one of the most complex plastic surgeries, Rhinoplasty is also one of the most popular surgeries worldwide.

In the UK Rhinoplasty has seen a 72% increase, and it is now the most popular cosmetic procedure in men.

    Benefits of Rhinoplasty

    • Increased self-confidence – By achieving a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing nasal profile, you can experience a boost in self-esteem and confidence.
    • Correction of nasal deformities – Rhinoplasty can correct congenital or acquired nasal deformities, such as a deviated septum, nasal trauma, or cleft lip nasal deformity.
    • Enhanced nasal symmetry – Rhinoplasty can address asymmetry in the nose, whether it’s due to genetics, injury, or previous surgery.
    • Correction of breathing difficulties – Functional rhinoplasty, which focuses on improving nasal function, can alleviate breathing difficulties caused by structural abnormalities.

    Liposuction

    liposuction surgery

This procedure involves removing excess fat from specific areas of your body, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, or buttocks, to improve body contours.

During liposuction, a thin tube called a cannula is inserted through small incisions in the skin.

The cannula is connected to a vacuum device or syringe, which sucks out the unwanted fat cells.

It’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure or a treatment for obesity.

Instead, it’s intended for combating localised areas of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

    Benefits of Liposuction

    • Fat reduction – Liposuction effectively removes stubborn fat deposits from various areas of the body. This can lead to a more contoured and slimmer appearance.
    • Improved body proportions – By selectively removing fat, liposuction can enhance body proportions and symmetry, helping you achieve a more balanced silhouette.
    • Boost in confidence – Many people undergo liposuction to address areas of their body that have been resistant to diet and exercise. Achieving the desired body shape can significantly boost your self-esteem and confidence.
    • Enhanced mobility – Excess fat deposits can restrict movement and cause discomfort. Liposuction can alleviate these issues, improving mobility and making physical activities more comfortable.
    • Treatment of Lipomas and Gynecomastia – Liposuction can also be used to remove benign fatty tumours called lipomas and to treat gynecomastia (enlarged male breasts), providing both cosmetic and functional benefits.

    Facelift

    facelift

Also known as rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing visible signs of ageing in the face and neck by tightening the skin and underlying muscles.

During a facelift procedure, the surgeon makes incisions in strategic locations, typically around the ears and sometimes extending into the hairline.

These incisions allow the surgeon to access the underlying facial tissues.

Depending on the specific technique used, the surgeon may also make additional incisions under the chin or in the scalp.

Facelift procedures have evolved over time, and there are various techniques available, including:

    • Traditional facelifts.
    • Mini facelifts.
    • Lower facelifts.

    Benefits of a Facelift

    • Reduced Wrinkles and Sagging – A facelift can address wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin on the face and neck, particularly in areas like the cheeks, jowls, and neck.
    • Improved Facial Contours – A facelift can restore youthful contours by lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues, resulting in a more defined jawline and cheekbones.
    • Enhanced Self-Confidence – By addressing visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and sagging skin, a facelift can help you feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance.
    • Natural-looking Results – When performed by one of our skilled and experienced plastic surgeons, a facelift can produce natural-looking results that enhance your facial features while preserving your unique appearance. Modern facelift techniques focus on creating subtle, rejuvenated results without a “pulled” or overly tight appearance.
    • Improved Skin Tone and Texture – In addition to addressing sagging skin and wrinkles, a facelift can also improve skin tone and texture, leading to smoother, more radiant skin.

    Abdominoplasty

    abdominoplasty

Commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, abdominoplasty involves removing excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightening the abdominal muscles to create a firmer and smoother profile.

During an abdominoplasty procedure, the surgeon typically makes an incision across the lower abdomen, usually just above the pubic area, extending from one hip bone to the other.

The length and shape of the incision may vary depending on the extent of correction needed and the specific technique used.

In some cases, additional incisions may be made around the belly button to address excess skin in the upper abdomen.

    Benefits of an Abdominoplasty

    • Improved abdominal contour – Abdominoplasty can address excess skin, fat, and laxity in the abdominal area, resulting in a flatter, more toned abdomen.
    • Correction of muscle separation – Pregnancy or significant weight fluctuations can lead to diastasis recti, a condition where the abdominal muscles become separated. Abdominoplasty allows the surgeon to repair and tighten these muscles, restoring core strength and improving abdominal tone.
    • Removal of stubborn fat deposits – In addition to removing excess skin, abdominoplasty can also eliminate stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. This can further enhance the contours of the abdomen and improve overall body shape.
    • Reduction of stretch marks – While abdominoplasty cannot eliminate all stretch marks, it can significantly reduce their appearance, particularly those located on the lower abdomen below the belly button. The surgical removal of excess skin can lead to a smoother and more even skin texture.
    • Improved posture and core strength – Repairing the abdominal muscles during abdominoplasty can improve core strength and stability, leading to better posture and reduced back pain.

Facelift Recovery: Your Path to Radiance with New Birkdale

As we age our skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner, causing wrinkles, creases and folds of skin to appear.

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is an operation to tighten and lift skin and soft tissues.

The surgery may lead to a long-term change that will hold your youthful and vibrant appearance, but is the recovery period too much?

In this guide, we will cover all of the key factors of this surgery and go into detail about the recovery process.

    What is a Facelift?

    facelift surgery

A facelift procedure is a cosmetic surgery that is designed to lift up and pull back the skin on your face, equalising in a tighter, smoother look.

A facelift involves the removal of excess facial fat and the tightening of facial muscles, this will result in a smoother, firmer facial appearance.

The surgeon will separate the skin from the underlying fat and muscle, and then the fat is removed.

It is often for people who experience issues with unwanted wrinkles, jowls and sagging skin.

You may lose youthful contours in the face for various reasons, including, sun damage, smoking, thinning of skin as well as heredity and stress.

What Can Affect Facelift Recovery Time?

    Age

While patients of all ages can fully heal and experience an impactful result, the length of recovery time might increase the older you are.

This is due to the physiological changes that occur in your body.

This does not mean that you are unable to get a facelift, just keep in mind that it may take longer to heal.

    facelift recovery time

    Health

Certain medical conditions can play a crucial part in whether or not you are suitable for a facelift.

Patients with high blood pressure and diabetes have a much higher risk of complications, it is possible to interfere with wound healing.

This means the recovery process will be much harder and your surgeon may even disqualify you from this procedure.

    Post Surgery Care

Unnecessary pain and complications of the infection can intensify if the care instructions are not followed carefully.

The success of the surgery is not only up to the surgeon, the patient plays a big part in this procedure too.

No matter the experience of the surgeon, it is impossible to receive perfect results if the patients do not properly take care of themselves after the surgery.

The patient needs to understand the time and effort required to ensure the patient receives all the positive changes associated with a facelift.

What are the Different Types of Facelift?

    recovering from a facelift

    Mini Face-lift

This form of facelift often concentrates on the lower third of the face, including the cheeks, jowls, and neck.

This procedure is able to lift the deeper facial structures, without requiring the surgeon to go any deeper.

This procedure aims to tighten and raise the skin and supporting tissues in these areas for a youthful looking outcome.

    Mid Face-lift

A mid-facelift is also known as a cheek fit.

This procedure tightens the skin from the upper mouth to the eye area, this can help with under eyes appearing less sunken.

It is important to know that this surgery does not target the jawline or forehead, unlike some facelift procedures.

    Lower Facelift

A lower facelift targets everything below the corners of the mouth.

This procedure lifts and tightens loose skin.

It helps smooth deep wrinkles in the lower third of the face.

    Traditional Facelift

The traditional facelift is considered the most well known facelift procedure, as it’s been around for quite a few decades.

A traditional facelift incision is considered to be a major surgery.

The incision starts at your temples and continues down and around the front of your ears.

This procedure is quite an invasive cosmetic surgery and is used to reposition the skin and muscles on the face and neck, which also improves the overall jawline.

There are also other facial surgeries such as chin augmentation that can help you change your appearance.

What to Expect with Facelift Recovery?

    reducing time after a facelift

The key thing to remember is that it is a time consuming process.

Once the surgery is completed, it could take up to 6 to 9 months to see the full effect of the facelift.

Following the surgery, you will not be able to drive for a number of days, so ensure you have time off prepared for after your procedure.

What to do Immediately After Surgery

Immediately after surgery, it is common to feel unsteady and tired.

It is crucial to have family or friends to be with you at this time to ensure you get through your first day safely.

Day one tends to be the time you experience the worst pain, you can maintain this with medication to stay on top of the discomfort you are feeling.

What to do in the First Week After Surgery?

In the first few days, rest and swelling control is crucial.

    Tips to reduce swelling

    • Use ice or cold pack
    • Avoid hot showers
    • Avoid eating or drinking hot items
    • Avoid smoking or drinking

Your skin will feel quite numb, and this will take several months for a normal sensation to return.

Rest, downtime and a healthy diet will give your body the tools it needs to recover the best and quickest it can.

What to do in the First Month

Once you make it through the first two or three weeks, most patients have gained the strength to return back to normal activities and work.

This is when the strict restrictions finally begin to ease.

While some activities may still be off-limits, many patients find they can gradually reintroduce certain things back into their daily routine.

We strongly advise you to not resume strenuous physical activities for six weeks to allow the tissues to fully recover.

Key Things You Need to Do for the Whole Process

It is crucial for a patient to understand the entire process before proceeding with a facelift surgery.

A facelift can significantly change and enhance the structure of your face, and can definitely be beneficial as the years go on.

But it requires a dedicated and time consuming process where every step should be planned out and prepared for.

Why Taking Doctor’s Recommendations Seriously is Important

Often patients have unrealistic expectations for their results, but doctors will provide a realistic outcome.

Taking doctor’s recommendations is extremely important to ensure you have a smooth recovery.

No matter how well the surgery goes, if rules are not followed you may risk losing all of your potential progress.

What to Expect from Your Tummy Tuck Recovery

The tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty is a procedure that reduces excess skin and fat around the abdomen and strengthens the abdominal wall musculature.

Situations like pregnancy or major weight gain can often cause abdominal muscles to separate.

The tummy tuck procedure can help with this.

In this article, we will talk to you through the tummy tuck recovery process and other key information to know about this procedure.

    What is a Tummy Tuck?

    preparing for a tummy tuck

A tummy tuck is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both men and women.

During this procedure, a relatively large incision is made across the trunk from hip to hip in the bikini line.

Surgeons may also decide to make incisions around the belly button and possibly vertically along the trunk if needed.

There is no doubt that struggling with excess skin and body fat can have a significant impact on an individual’s self-esteem.

If you struggle with having loose or sagging skin in your stomach area, a tummy tuck can help flatten and tone that area.

But it’s important to understand that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery.

Although liposuction may sometimes be performed alongside the procedure to remove excess fat.

It also helps create a structured look.

Different types of tummy tucks are available, including mini, full and extended.

Is Recovery From a Tummy Tuck Painful?

It is extremely normal to experience a level of discomfort during the first couple of days post-op.

Initially after a standard tummy tuck you may experience tiredness and have moderate pain for several days to a week.

However, this pain will steadily improve and you will be provided with medication to help ease the pain.

A tummy tuck can achieve improvements for your body but requires a lot of downtime to allow this procedure to heal and ensure you receive the best possible results.

How Long Does a Tummy Tuck Recovery Take?

how long does a tummy tuck image of a lady after tummy tuck procedure on white background.

As with any major surgery, recovery times can vary depending on each individual.

It is recommended to take about 4 – 6 weeks off work and very little exercise and you cannot drive for a few weeks after the operation.

As a whole, the operation may take about 6 weeks to fully recover and you will begin to notice the full effect of the tummy tuck.

    What Can Affect Recovery Time?

    Age

    Age can affect recovery time.

However, this can easily be resolved with guidance from our surgeons.

Although your recovery may be slower, older patients do not have a higher risk of complications.

    Health

It is important to understand that not everyone will be the ideal candidate for this surgery.

Preexisting health conditions may increase the risk of some issues happening during the recovery process.

To prevent this, ensure you inform your surgeon about any health conditions you have before progressing.

Other topics that may affect your recovery time are:

    • Smoking or tobacco product use
    • Obesity or overweight
    • History of clotting issues
    • Use of certain medications
    tummy tuck procedure

    Type of Surgery

As talked about previously, there are several types of tummy tucks that can be performed.

The more extensive your abdominal contouring is, the longer it may take to recover.

    Full Tummy Tuck

If you have weakened abdominal muscles or excessive skin you may consider a full tummy tuck to flatten and contour the areas above and below the belly button.

    Mini Tummy Tuck

Opposite to a tummy tuck, the mini tummy tuck only affects the lower abdomen which is the area below the belly button.

Those who would like a mini tummy tuck are often almost at their ideal weight but frustrated by stubborn fat between the pubic area and the navel that you might struggle to get rid of.

    Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck involves the components of a full tummy tuck with the addition of improving your flanks.

If you are having this type of tummy tuck you may also benefit from liposuction which is usually performed on the hips, love handles and flanks.

This procedure involves a larger incision than a full tummy tuck.

    Drainless Tummy Tuck

Drains are often temporarily placed through a small incision during some tummy tuck procedures.

The drains are used to prevent the collection of fluid that builds up between the skin and muscle.

This technique requires slightly more surgical time which introduces its own potential risks.

Depending on the job, you may have the ability to go back to work 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

Drainless tummy tuck patients are expected to wear a compression garment during their healing process.

    Non-Surgical Tummy Tuck

Non-surgical skin tightening can be very appealing to some people.

If you have mild to moderate loose skin you may be the correct audience for non-surgical tightening.

However, results can only last for up to a year.

    Post Surgery Care

If you do not take post-surgery care seriously there is a chance that your end result will be affected and the recovery time will take longer.

Any post-surgery care that is needed will be provided by your surgeon.

During the time of recovery, you will be required to wear a special type of corset or tummy-control pants for 6 weeks.

These two items encourage your skin to heal properly and reduce swelling.

What to Expect With a Tummy Tuck Recovery?

candidate for a tummy tuck surgery

Before going forward with abdominoplasty it is crucial that you understand this is not a fast-paced process.

It will take about 6 weeks (possibly more depending on how fast you heal) to fully recover from this procedure.

You will have to ensure that you follow the surgeon’s guidance during this time period, which may be a hard task if you have kids or work full-time.

What to do Immediately After Surgery

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis.

So it is important to bring someone along with you to take you home and support you through the rest of the day.

It may take several hours before it begins to wear off.

Discomfort is extremely normal after surgery, which can be eased with some medication.

During your pre-operative appointment, you will receive prescriptions to take pre-surgery to reduce the risk of infection.

You will also receive pain medication for your discomfort.

What to do in The First Week After Surgery

The first week involves a lot of rest.

This will not only help you heal, but it will reduce swelling too.

And will ensure you receive the best result possible.

Bed rest is recommended for the first 2 days after your procedure has been completed.

And on the 3rd day introducing your body to some exercise is encouraged but should stay limited.

A post-tummy tuck compression garment should be worn at all times during the first week and is encouraged to be worn as much as possible during the whole recovery process.

Patients should stay hydrated and maintain a diet that is low in sodium to reduce swelling.

What to do in The First Month

Some restrictions are lifted after the first week.

However, it is important to stick to your surgeon’s instructions.

It is recommended to lightly massage the treated area to promote healing.

It is common to notice side effects after the first week. These side effect can include:

    • Finding it difficult to stand up straight
    • Have pain and bruising
    • Feel numbness in your tummy for a few months to even years
    • Have temporary fluid-filled swelling above the scar
    • Have raised scars that may look red or different from your usual skin colour

These are completely normal so do not worry.

Key Things You Need to Do for The Whole Process

Prioritising your abdominoplasty recovery is a crucial part of your overall recovery.

To ensure you continue your smooth recovery, drink plenty of water, eat a balanced diet and stick to any recommendations you receive from your surgeon.

Avoid any abdominal exercises or strenuous activities such as weight lifting, bicycle riding and jogging for 6 to 8 weeks depending on the speed of your recovery.

It is a time-consuming process, so prioritise getting stronger each day as you move toward your end goal of a full recovery.

Why is Taking a Doctor’s Recommendations Seriously Important?

taking the doctors recommendations seriously after surgery.

Following a doctor’s recommendations is extremely important.

Your surgeon’s advice and treatment plan will be useless if you don’t follow the advice that has been provided.

If you do not take your surgeon’s recommendations seriously, you will be risking your progress and outcome.

It is no surprise that this is a time-consuming recovery process, so make sure to follow the doctor’s recommendations to ensure the best possible recovery.

With time, your body will heal and your results will begin to be very clear.

Why is a Tummy Tuck Done?

A tummy tuck is encouraged when you would like to lose excess skin or fat and tighten a weak fascia.

It can also help remove stretch marks and excess skin in the lower abdomen.

If you have had fat removed from your abdomen (liposuction), it could be a good decision to also receive a tummy tuck.

The reasoning for this is liposuction removes tissue just under the skin and fat but not any excess skin.

Understanding Different Types of Facelifts: Your Guide to Rejuvenation

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at reducing the signs of ageing on the face and neck.

There are several types of facelift procedures, each designed to address specific concerns and achieve different outcomes.

In this article, we will discuss the different types of facelifts available so you’ll know which one might best suit your needs.

    woman after facelift surgery

    Types of Facelifts

    The Mini Lift

The term “Mini Lift” typically refers to a less invasive facelift procedure designed to address early signs of ageing, particularly in the lower face and jawline.

While the specific techniques may vary among surgeons, the Mini Lift generally involves smaller incisions compared to traditional facelift procedures, resulting in a quicker recovery time.

The procedure primarily focuses on lifting and tightening the skin and underlying tissues in the lower face, including the jawline and jowls.

It is less extensive than full facelift procedures, making it suitable if you have mild to moderate signs of ageing.

Depending on the specific technique used by the surgeon, a Mini Lift may or may not involve the manipulation of deeper facial muscles (such as the SMAS – Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System).

Some variations of the Mini Lift focus more on skin tightening, while others may address a combination of skin and muscle.

Mini Lifts are often performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, reducing the risks associated with general anaesthesia. The recovery period is generally shorter compared to more extensive facelift procedures.

The SMAS Lift (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System Lift)

    showing off facelift

The SMAS lift, or Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System lift, is a traditional facelift procedure designed to address signs of ageing in the midface, lower face and neck.

The Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System (SMAS) is a layer of tissues located beneath the skin and fat that covers the face.

This layer includes muscles, connective tissue and fat, and it plays a crucial role in facial movement and support.

The surgeon typically makes incisions along the hairline, extending around the ear and, in some cases, under the chin.

These incisions allow access to the underlying facial structures for lifting and repositioning.

The main focus of the SMAS lift is on manipulating and lifting the SMAS layer.

By doing so, the surgeon can address both the skin and the deeper tissues, providing a more comprehensive and longer-lasting improvement compared to procedures that solely address the skin.

The surgeon lifts and repositions the SMAS layer, which includes muscles and connective tissue.

This helps restore a more youthful contour to the face by addressing sagging and laxity in the midface and jowl areas.

In addition to SMAS manipulation, the surgeon may also tighten and trim excess skin to achieve a smoother and more rejuvenated appearance.

SMAS lifts are typically performed under general anaesthesia. The recovery period may involve some swelling and bruising, and patients often need to take some time off from regular activities during the initial healing phase.

This particular study suggests that the SMAS procedures provided a greater lift along both horizontal and vertical vectors than the skin lift alone.

    The Extended SMAS Lift

The Extended SMAS Lift is a variation of the traditional SMAS lift, and it involves a more extensive surgical technique to address a larger area of the face.

Like the standard SMAS lift, the extended version focuses on lifting and repositioning the underlying facial muscles, tissues, and skin to achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

The extended version also involves making incisions along the hairline, around the ear, and possibly under the chin.

These incisions allow the surgeon access to the deeper layers of facial tissues.

The primary emphasis is on manipulating and lifting the extended portion of the SMAS layer.

This extended dissection allows the surgeon to address a broader area of the face, including the midface, jowls and neck.

The surgeon lifts and repositions not only the standard SMAS layer but also extends the manipulation to cover a more extensive facial region.

This approach provides a more thorough correction of sagging and laxity in the midface and neck.

As with the traditional SMAS lift, the extended version may involve additional steps to tighten and trim excess skin, creating a smoother and more rejuvenated facial contour.

Extended SMAS lifts are typically performed under general anaesthesia.

    The Composite Facelift

    types of facelift

The Composite Facelift is a comprehensive facial rejuvenation procedure that combines elements of both the deep plane facelift and the traditional SMAS facelift.

This approach aims to address multiple layers of facial tissues, providing a more holistic and natural-looking result.

Similar to other facelift techniques, the Composite Facelift involves incisions made along the hairline, around the ear, and possibly extending into the natural creases of the skin.

These incisions allow the surgeon access to the deeper layers of facial tissues.

The term “composite” reflects the combined manipulation of both the SMAS layer and the deeper facial structures known as the deep plane.

By addressing both layers, the surgeon can lift and reposition a more extensive area of the face.

The surgeon lifts and repositions not only the SMAS but also the deeper facial structures, including muscles and connective tissues.

This dual-layer approach provides a more thorough correction of sagging and laxity in the midface, jowls, and neck.

In some cases, the Composite Facelift may involve repositioning or redistributing facial fat to restore volume in areas that have lost fullness due to ageing.

As with other facelift procedures, the Composite Facelift may include steps to tighten and trim excess skin, resulting in a smoother and more rejuvenated facial contour.

The Composite Facelift is suitable if you have significant signs of ageing in multiple facial regions, including the midface, jowls, and neck.

It is a more comprehensive solution compared to some other facelift techniques.

    Liquid Facelift

A liquid facelift, often referred to as a nonsurgical facelift or injectable facelift, is a cosmetic procedure that involves the use of injectable dermal fillers and neuromodulators (such as Botox or Dysport) to achieve facial rejuvenation without surgery.

This approach is less invasive than traditional facelift surgery and is generally associated with minimal downtime.

Dermal fillers, which are often made of hyaluronic acid or other biocompatible materials, are injected into specific areas of the face to add volume, smooth wrinkles, and restore a more youthful appearance.

Common areas for filler injection include the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and areas with volume loss.

Neuromodulators, such as Botox or Dysport, are injected into targeted facial muscles to temporarily relax them.

This can reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, particularly around the eyes and forehead. Neuromodulators are commonly used to address crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines.

A liquid facelift is a customisable procedure tailored to your unique facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

The combination of dermal fillers and neuromodulators can be adjusted to address specific concerns and achieve a natural-looking result.

Liquid facelifts are typically performed as outpatient procedures and often require minimal time.

You can often resume your normal activities shortly after the treatment.

Is it common to have other face surgeries after getting a facelift?

types of facelift - feature image

The decision to undergo additional face surgeries after getting a facelift depends on various factors, including individual preferences, aesthetic goals and specific areas of concern.

Some common procedures that may be considered in conjunction with or after a facelift include:

    • Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) – Eyelid surgery addresses sagging skin and fat deposits around the eyes. It can be performed concurrently with a facelift or as a separate procedure to rejuvenate the upper or lower eyelids.
    • Brow Lift (Forehead Lift) – A brow lift can be done to lift and tighten the brow and forehead areas. It may complement the results of a facelift by addressing sagging or heaviness in the upper face.
    • Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) – You may choose to undergo rhinoplasty to enhance the shape and proportions of your nose. This procedure can be performed separately from a facelift.
    • Chin Augmentation or Reduction – Procedures to enhance or reduce the size of the chin can improve facial balance. These surgeries may be performed independently or in combination with a facelift.
    • Injectable Treatments – Non-surgical options, such as dermal fillers and neuromodulators, may be used to maintain or enhance the results of a facelift over time.
