What is Ear Surgery?

Ear Surgery, also known as Otoplasty, ‘Pinnaplasty’ or ‘Bat Ear Correction’ is surgery used to pin back ears that stick out so that they lie closer to the head. Ear shape and size can also be altered to make them more proportionate to the rest of your face.

Who is Suitable for Ear Surgery?

A person may want ear surgery for various reasons. These include:

Hearing hurtful comments from colleagues, clients or friends.
Feeling certain desired hairstyles would only showcase the issue.
Hats, caps and other tried headwear do not hide your ears.

The Ear Surgery Procedure

You will be put under general or local anaesthetic with possible sedation to ensure you don’t experience any pain during your surgery.

Otoplasty: A small incision is made behind the ears to reach the cartilage, which is then sculptured and bent towards the head. Permanent stitches are used to maintain the ears’ new position. Sometimes, the cartilage is folded to help create the new shape and position. No visible scarring should occur.

The procedure takes 1-2 hours to perform.
Any incisions are sealed with stitches that will be removed within a week.
Patients can usually go home the same day.
Hearing will not be affected by an Otoplasty.

What To Expect After Ear Surgery

There may be some bruising or scarring, though this will be hidden behind your ear so will be unnoticeable. The bruising should subside within 2 weeks.
After the procedure, a bulky dressing will be used to protect your ears from knocks, bangs or infection and remain there for 1 week.
Approximately 1 week after the procedure, temporary stitches will be removed or dissolve naturally.
You will not be able to wash your hair while the bandage is attached.
Patients generally take 1 week off work.
You may also experience a tingling sensation for a few weeks as your ears settle into its new shape.
Any activity in which the ear may be bent should be avoided for at least 1 month.
Full contact sport, such as rugby and football, as well as swimming should be avoided for 2-3 months.
