With the world of cosmetic surgery evolving and following a more natural route, fat transfer surgery has increased in popularity. Procedures such as facial fat transfers, lipofilling, and fat grafting breast augmentation are some of the most common.

    What is Fat Transfer Surgery?

Fat transfer is a surgical procedure where fat is moved from one part of your body to another. Also known as a ‘fat graft’ or ‘lipomodelling’, its aim is to remove excess fat from an area where it isn’t wanted and then use it to smooth out or increase the size of another area such as the face, buttocks, breasts or penis.

Fat transfer isn’t just an option for a purely cosmetic outcome, it can be used to help with skin deformities, reconstruction surgery and traumatic defects.

This type of procedure has a number of major benefits, possibly the biggest one being that your own cells are being moved from one area to another.

It’s not from animals or synthetic products. Once the fat has been taken, it will remain in the area where it has been placed forever. As the world is moving more naturally with cosmetic procedures, fat transfers are providing an alternative to fillers, allowing people to avoid synthetic solutions.

It has the added benefits of rejuvenating skin and bringing in a new, healthy blood supply.

What does fat transfer surgery involve?

Fat transfer surgery begins with extracting fat cells from an area such as your tummy, thighs, buttocks; then re-injecting them into another place on the body.

The procedure is carried out under either general or local anaesthetic; this will be determined by the amount of fat required.

The first step in the process is to harvest the fat. Small incisions are made in the skin, and a thin tube is used to suck out very small amounts of fat in a process very similar to liposuction. These incisions are then closed up with stitches.

The fat then needs to be prepared before it’s put back into your body. Specialist equipment is used to cleanse the fat in order to remove any impurities such as blood or other fluids.

The final stage involves the fat being injected back into your body in the specific area being treated. Stitches aren’t normally needed for this final step in the procedure.

Only a certain amount of fat can be injected into an area at one time to ensure the tissue is not over-saturated. Some of this fat (approximately 30%) is expected to reabsorb.

This means that more sessions may be needed, depending on the look you’re hoping to achieve and your surgeon will discuss this with you at your consultation.

The procedure usually lasts a couple of hours and you may be able to go home soon after but there may be the need to stay in our hospital overnight, again your surgeon will advise you every step of the way.

You will need to arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure.

It can take up to 6 months for a surgical fat transfer to fully take effect, as some of the injected fat may be reabsorbed by your body during the first few months after the procedure.

    Benefits of Fat Transfer Surgery

    • Double benefits – fat transfer and contouring the body
    • Natural look – gives a natural look as compared to artificial implants
    • Less invasive and minimal risks – because it uses your own body fat, it is less invasive and causes minimal or no allergic reactions on skin.
    • Long-lasting results – it is a longer lasting solution as compared to the fillers.

    Facial Fat Transfer

Fat transfer surgery for the face is becoming increasingly popular and provides an alternative treatment to fillers and facial implants.

As we get older the fat content in our face – particularly the mid-face and chin area – loses some volume, helping to draw the skin downwards. This can make our cheeks look rather sunken and the whole face a little empty.

A similar process can happen if you lose a lot of weight and fat transfer can help you regain a more youthful look and give you a healthier glow.

Fat transfer will fill in wrinkles, imperfections or scars as well as to boost the volume of lips or cheeks to create a smoother and naturally fuller look.

The procedure is often be combined with a face lift and upper and lower eyelift, to add to the overall look.

    Fat Transfer For Breasts

Breast fat transfer is also known as natural breast augmentation and it will add shape and definition but it won’t provide a substantial increase in size. At New Birkdale, we also offer surgical breast augmentation which involves inserting a breast implant.

Unlike artificial option, natural fat transfer will need you to have enough fat to transfer for treatment, meaning it is not always suitable for those with low body mass. You can discuss the procedure and desired outcome at a consultation when your surgeon will be able to guide you depending on your own individual body.

As the procedure is minimally invasive, your downtime will be far less than traditional breast implant surgery.

    Lipofilling Breasts

Breast augmentation with fat transfer can also restore volume and shape to breasts that have been lost due to the ageing process, weight loss, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

When fat is removed from the body through liposuction, it is then moved to the breast and shaped to create your desired appearance.  This procedure is used in conjunction with breast reconstruction surgery to achieve a more full appearance.

    Fat Transfer for the Penis

Penis fat grafting is also known as ‘fat transfer phalloplasty’ and can result in a larger penis after fat is transferred into the penile shaft.

Using the body’s own fat supply keeps the filler 100% natural.

The key benefits of penis fat grafting are enhanced penis girth and length when flaccid. You should also experience Improved erections and orgasms due to adipose stem cells as well as a significant boost in confidence and self-esteem.

Once the fat has been extracted from a chosen area, it will be purified and transferred to your penis. A small incision will be made at the base of your penis through which a cannula can enter and administer the fat.

You may feel a little tugging or pulling sensation throughout the process but there should be minimal discomfort thanks to the local anaesthesia.
